Replying to a deputation of the Tramway Workers' Union, protesting against official espionage on tlio tramways, tho Chief Commissioner said that careful consideration would bo given to a suggestion to enablo aji accused man to sccuro evidonco ill his defence.. If tlio Commissioners could sco their way to modify the oxisting system, while preserving a check on dishonesty, they would be as glad as tho men thomselves to do so; but when tho deputation comes with demands as representatives of tho men, tho Commissioners wero unablo to depart from tho position they had taken up. Tho Commissioners must bo allowed to manage tho affairs of their department in their own way. LATER. STRIKE PROPOSAL REJECTED, (Rec. July 22, 1.2 a.m.) Sydney, July 21. A meetiug of'the tramway men to-night passed a resolution to again wait on tho Commissioners to-morrow. An amendment that a strilco bo ordered was negatived. Tho situation is not promising.
