HUTT RAILWAY DUPLICATION.
PROGRESS OF THE WORK. Thoro !aro 307 men employed on the llutt Railway duplication works at present, which is the largest number yet employed at one time. The rough .weather of the. last few weeks lias not been favourable to, tlio work, but the Railway Department' states that considerable progress is being mado. The earthworks and formation aro completed from Petoup to Ngahauranga. and the lines aro laid most of the way,.,though a road has still to bo formed. The necessity ~ of shifting telegraph posts has caused opera- . tions on this Section to be more protracted than they otherwise would have been. Tile now station buildings and platforms at Ngahauranga are finished, but'have, not yet been opened, as it is still nccessaray to place heavy stones in position as wave-breakcra to strengthen tho formation of the line. Tho station will bo opened in two months' time; during tho present state of operations' on tho; line 110 purpose would be served, the authorities state, by opening it sooner. It is oxpected that the duplication -works , will reach Kaiwarra by being well, and between Kaiwarr.i and Wellington a good deal of work has already been done, although it is not obvious to tho cyo. Several hundred tons of have been deposited towards filling in Kay,-which has a depth of 30 feet. Tho frork between Kaiwarra and Ngahauranga i» not nearly so lieavy as that from Ngiihaiirariga N'nrth, and between Kaiwarra and Wellington, with the exception of Deep Bay, tho work is fairly easy.
