A PUBLIC POUND CONDEMNED. The fortnightly meeting' of the Committee ' of 'the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in tlie_Cliambqr of Com-, merco yestorday,. there benig present : —Mr. J. Uott (chairman),.", Mrs. Christie,, -arid Messrs. Brown, Watson, Jameson, a'nd' the Rev. J. R. Glassoii. ' . Contributions',to the funds of tho Socicty wero acknowledged from tlio following: —New Zealand .Express Company, 10s. 6d.; Messrs. A. H. Turnbull, T. A. Wells, A. V. Knapp, Lady Atkinson, Evans Bay Timber Company; "A Friend," "J.C.," ss. each Miss ltousMartcn, 'Mesdames Boyd, "llcrti, Rankinc- ' Brown, ami two "Frionds : ,"-'2s. ; 6d. ; "A Friend," 25.;. tolal, £'i 2s. 6d. The Society's Inspector (Mr. Seed), re-, ported Jiaving dealt; with 'several cases of neglect and ill-treatment, and in two instances, where gross cruelty to horses was involved, had had tho owners of the animals" prosecuted, heavy ' fines being in both cases" imposed. ■ He also brought under, the notice of tho Committee the results of li-.visit of inspection, which he, in company .with tlio 'local >con- . stable, had paid to tho public -pound in ; thd . Upper Hutt. The condition of tho pound, said he, was a disgrace to a civilised community,; arid the pure milk question Was not likely to bo solved in a .district where milchcows wero liable to be impounded in such an undesirable placo. Ho condemned the condition of the pound. • It was decided to writo to tho .Upper ,Hutt Town Board, drawing attention to tho stato of affairs as disclosed in tlio Inspcctor's re- - port, and urging tho necessity, of taking, im-'. mediate steps: to remedy .the condition of the. pound.' <• ,
