WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. WINTER MEETING. PARLIAMENTARY HANDICAP WON BY SIR FRISCO. ; WINTER HURDLES BY COMPASS. . There were not a foir people who felt convinced that the rough state of tho weather would necossitato\ the postponement of tho races on Saturday. But the racing club committee after, holding a meeting early in tho morning decided to proceed with the programme. It was anything but an ideal day for racing. A sovero southerly galo was blowing, and heavy rain fell almost continuously throughout the day. Occasionally thero. was a, lull, in the rain, but at such times the wind redoubled its fury, and made matters .very , unpleasant. . Tho trains going to the racecourse had not the usual crowds to carry though the attendanco'was considerably supplemented by the number which travelled out after 0110 o'clock. . / The.grounds had. been looking well, but the stormy woather had unsettled thorn, and in tho lawn and saddling paddock it was wet arid slushy under foot.. The.-main grandstand provided good shelter for those of tho spectators who choose to remain thero, but the- Stewards' Stand was not constructed to resist tho southerly, and stewards, Press,, and-trainors received tho full blast of tho galo,as-it swept down tho course. Looking across tho courso at parts of the day thero wa3'a great sheet of 'rain falling, and in several races it wa3 difficult.to follow tho horses as they travelled . from the six furlongs post to the straight. Many of tho public oppressed disappointment that thero wero no- steeplechases on tho. programmo as tho weather and the going seemed totally unsuitable for flat racing. The totalisator returns suffered considerably for the. day, but tho club received a handsome sum in licenso fees from tho bookmakers. Tho latter gentry had a rather rough timo contending with' tho elements; and business was not by any means brisk. At timoa' they wero .quite deserted, and- it was only for about ten minutes before tho start of each raco that they did ally business at all. ' The greater number of them ■ would have preferred a postponement, but having taken-out licenses they wont to the 'course to mako the best of tlio bad 'day.- . ' : - . The going on tho racing track was decidedly ■ heavy, and - tlio times were consequently very slow. Horses and riders camo in bespattered with mud after each event. The jockoys made good uso of their top-coats, and thoy - must havo been reluctant to doff .them-at''tho barrior. .Tho galo blew directly against; horses and ridors as thoy finished;'and proved very trying. Tho fields throughout the day were largo, and tho racing passed off without accident. Tho principal ovont, tho Wintor Hurdles, was won by Compass, after a pretty raco with Scotty, while tno ■ Parliamentary Handicap fell to tho Trentham-trained Sir Frisco, who scored most decisively. NOTES ON THE RACING. . • [By Glisncoe.] The Seer, Merrio Zealand, Hiro, and Haldario wero - withdrawn from the Stewards' Aboriginal and Irish Riflo wero most fancied, and Kurawaka and Duart were next in demand. Duart, who is. not usually of much account in tho mud, commenced very woll, but as tho straight -was' reached ho dropped right back, and when returning to the enclosure, lib was bleeding at tho rioso and mouth.- Martyrium went to tho front at tho four-furlong post and won very easily at tho finish. Irish. Riflo ran disappointingly and' failed to secure a' placo. Golden Gate put in a good run from the bottom of the straight,' but'. Was unable to 1 extend .Martyrium, who did better in tho soft going than was expected of her. Aboriginal, usually a Rood mud horse, did not'run up his track form. _ He appeared to bo -coming along, nicely in the straight, but must have been hampered by the gale.. Immolation,' Landwern, and Kurawaka finishod in a cluster close behind the third horso. , , v . , Iranui and Rssoarch wero the. only two "scratching.! in the Miramar Hack. California was installed >a', solid favourite,'and though ho did not get avay tco well ho won very easily at tho finish. On Saturday morning California sprinted over two furlongs'a couplo of. seoonds faster than, anything on tho.track.;' It was iiot, thereforo, surprising that the timo'recorded for'this, raco 'was .faster than that. show;n for the Stewards' Handicap. Vasa, who is . now : moro tractablo at tho'.barrier, .was easily second, but had no chance with California. local, jockey, T. Pritchard, who dislocated his shoulder at Napier Park, was ivcll enough to ride Glontui in thjs also had four other mounts during'liho'dhy. 1 J. Hall, who had:a couplo of nasty falls .at Gisborne, was also riding on, Saturday. ~ : , A dozen" liorses ".lined up for the Hack Hurdles. Ghoorka; who was making his firSt appcaranco over' the sticks, was selected'as fayourito, whilo Top Rose and Defeat- wero fairly well backed. Ghoorka ran about'fourth for tho first-milo, but lie was jumping too big and eventually' tired to nothing. Otaraoa acted as pace-jnaker closely attended'by Top Rose. This pair wero in-front right up till the last hurdle, where Defeat appeared on the scone. 'Otaraoa was, then done with; but Top Roso battled the'journey/out with Defeat'. ' The latter, however, is too- gamb- a finisher,, arid managed to win by a length. ,1 formed a very good'opiiiion of Defeat .v,-hen I saw him at .Fcilding at . Easter, and -when tho Wellington weights appeared I pointed, him out as well treated in this particular race. Ho may ; not bo the sort to win a National, but ho is just the kind of jumper to liavo- in. any. stablo; Irish Rifle, Clanchattan, Star Roso, and lialdane, being.'.the - only withdrawals from; tho Parliamentary Handicap, left tlio good field of fourteen to contest the race. Seaman and Dawn wero. tho favourites, but Sir Frisco 1 and Swimming Belt wore the best-cpuditioncd. horses in tho .field. Condition is'tho great factor in heavy going. Swimming Belt ; is not a good horso in tho mud, but Sir Frisco is, and it is surprising that ;he was not mado favourite ,on his condition and looks alone. Ryan got his mount to the front, early; and. the..San Francisco, colt never, left tho issue in doubt.. He had a challenge from ■'.that, resolute finisher Seaman; but it madei very - little impression on; him. - Nothing behind Se&man had a- chance, for Dawn, tho third hoTse, was a good two lengths away. Truco, who is not nearly ready yet, finished sccond to last. Sir Frisco is engaged, in- tlio Winter Cup at Riccarton, and in. tlio Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps at Ralidwick.-It is possible that he will bo shipped to Sydney ■ Hoxti month. .. ' ; .In' ! a field of ten , liorses in . the . Winter • Hurdles," tho public 1 had no hesitation' in making Compass a pronounced favourite. Scotty took tho lead'-'early, and set a good paeo in the heavy going, but the favourito was ou tho track of tho St. Leger gelding the wholoway, and when the straight was reached Compass camo right away and won with ridiculous ease,.while'Scotty was a long way ahead of tho third horso Snip. Compass was so fa,rahead of Sootty.that he must havo.distanced' several of, the'' candidates. - In tho Grand National Hurdles Compass will have to carry lOst.,- 0r,,91b5. moro than ho won with ,-,011 Saturday.. .. . . , Scotty jumped better with' the colours up than ho has done on the training track, but, as it was his first racing effort-over jumps, ho tired-very much. - It is evident that no-mat-ter' how much- paco horses may' have, the majority of them want at least one-race Over the jumps beforo they-aro capable of' winning.l, " - : - Shrapnel, who, struck-himself in a gallop during tho week; never showed up'after tlio start,', and Exmoor, Hylio..has been off ' tlio sceno for moro than' a year, was one of tho last to finish. : ■ The.i Trial Plate was won. rather easily by -Effort, who is quartered in tho same stablo as Sir. Frisco.. Thb filly.-gave W. Ryan : his. second winning ride during tlio afternoon. On tho tracks Effort has not been showing to advantage. Ennius, tho favourito, was never in tho hunt. Vinco led for a fow furlongs but failed to stay, and does not appear to have improved "much since tho spring:! Llanwern, who was making his first appearance, performed creditably, and Consuelo showed; improvement. . In the To Aro, Hack, backers wero divided between Tumut, Yosami, 'Pronun, and Silkwob. Pronun, who had beaten The Seer in a gallop beforo leaving homo, was well supported by his connections. Naumai as usual mado tho paco, but in tho last furlong tho weight stopped .tlio Conqueror gelding, and Projiun won rather easily. Silkweb did not get away too well, but he camo with a rattlo at tho finish, and secured third place, whilo Lochicla was fourth. Glen got badly left, and hud to till the field home. Lctherin arrived at tho courso on Friday night along with tho other Wairarnpa liorses, and if ho stands up to his work all right will bo started on Wednesday. ' 1 jSlow Tom, ono of tho steeplechase Candidates; came up from Lyttelton on Saturday morning, • and was railed to Trent-ham.
