Fogwell rowed to-day on the Raymond Terrace course, Hunter Rivor, for the championship of Australia (handed over to Thoroughgood by R. Trosiddor 1 after tho latter's ■ defeat by .Webb) and for £100 a-sido." From an oven start, Thoroughgood was soon a quarter of a length ahead. This lead ho held to past tho half-mile; then Fogwell drow level, rowing stroke for stroke. An exciting struggle ensued to the mile, which was covered in smin. SOsec. Just beyond tho miley both,men took the middle of the river, and fouled; both appealed. ; • Thoroughgood was ; the ; quipker to- get go-' ing again, and established . a lead of six lengths before FogweU;,had-fairly.siarted in pursuit. Though Fogwell stuck, gamely to his task to tho finish, he was unable, to overhaul Thoroughgood, who won by eight lengths in lßmiiu 20. 2-ssec., The umpire declared- Thoroughgood- the winner., . ■- . ' ,i> : - , REGULATIONS-NEEDED. Thoroughgood is au;very powerful man of 13 stone weight, anib.approaching 40 years of age. He challenged, Tresidder before the latter's match with Webb. Fogwell; is the Australian sculler who came over here when Tresidder was training to meet Webb, and who is reported to have stated in Australia, after the Wanganui race,- that Tresidder was : not "and held- Webb too' cheaply.
