EWDRG PERJURY CASE ADJOURNED, THE PRINCE PROTESTS. : TRIAL MAY NEVER BE RESUMED. (BT TILEfIBAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION— COPIBIOHT.) | t (Rec. July 19, 4.15 p.m.) Berlin, July 18. Tho trial of Princo Philip Euloiiburg (tlio , contral flguro of Herr Harden's " camarilla " charges), oil a chargo of having committed porjury in denying on oath certain malpractices, has been adjourned indefinitely on the ground thai; Prince Euloiiburg is physically incapable of following the proceedings and of conducting his defence. Tho adjournment was madij oil tho advico of medical exports, and at' the instance of the Public Prosecutor. ■ , Princo Eulenburg, raising himself on Mb couch, earnestly and vainly implored the Court to proceed with tho case. He urged tho painful suspense, his uncertainty of recovery,- and the prospect of his dying before tho chargo was cleared up. The general impression is that tho trial will not bo resumed. JUSTICE AND PREJUDICE, . Princo Philip . Eulenburg was arrested at his castlo at Liebenburg on ; May 7, in consequence of statements made by 'a former valet, and by another witness, in the course of an action brought by Eei;r Harden against' a Munich newspaper. In the action for criminal libel decided at Berlin last January against Herr Harden, Prince Philip Eulenburg had denied the charges which Herr . Harden' had made against lnm in the "Zukuuft." But following on tho verdict in the Munich ease in favour of Herr Harden' the Public Prosecutor considered that ho had no other course open than .to arrest' tho Prince. As lie was suffering from neuritis aud a swelling, ofUthe legs ho was conveyed to a private hospital, whefo he remained in chargo of the police. In giving evidence tho other djjy against his former master, tho valet said: "The truth is out. You and I, Prince, aro lost so far as this world is concerned. Nothing'can help us." In order to appreciate the intensity, of tho public excitement in this case (writes tho Berlin correspondent of tho "Daily Telegraph"), it must bo recollected that Prince Eulenburg is head of a family of which three members, including himself, are Ivnights of the Black Eagle, tho highest Prussian Order, and that he was for many years tho confidant ,of the Emperor, who conferred upon him the rare distinction of princely rank. It must bo admitted that the Princo is now getting almost as little fairplay as his Herr Harden, did before him. Tlio practice of trying and condemning accused persons in the Press which prevails in this country raises such an, atmosphere of-prejudice against them that a fair triril is practically impossible.
