. »- J. . , MONTHLY MEETING. ' '.The monthly meeting of tlio Hutt County Council was held ■ yesterday, there boing present: —Councillors Galloway (in the' chair),. Welch, Lynch, Edwards, AVakeham, and Whiteman. : : The summary of expenditure passed. for payment to July'l4,l9oß, was as follows:— General, account, £238 Is. 7d. Ridings: Epuni, £80 10s. 4d.; Horokiwi, £102 lis. 7,d.; Mungaroa, £203 9s. 7d.; ■ Wainui, £46 145.; 9d.; AVhareroa,.! £80 6s. 4d. , Grants in Aid: Moonshine-Upper Hutt road, £12 los.; Mungaroa-Upper Hutt road,' £64 35., Inter-, est on loans, ,£6O -75,, 7d. Total amount passed., £«JOl 14s. sd. ' le . Treasury forwarded advice note of payment of £1 10L .in connection with the impounding of Trooper Whittington's horse. A letter was received from, the Railway Department stating that a crossing would he provided near Haywards, on receipt of the sum of' £90/ The matter was allowed ito stand over. , Some / vigorous correspondence, described by one of the councillors as being of a somewhat bellicose nature, was received from the newly-formed Upper Hutt Town Board. There wore nino letters in all, and the sub-, stance of them was of the nature of a rebuke, administered for various sins of omission and commission on the part of the County Council. No action was taken by the latter- body, and the letters were disposed of with the remark that' "that was the end;of the trash." ■ • ; . Messrs. Ballinger-arid Stewart's application for- permission, to erect a gate across the Hutt-Waikanae road was granted; subject to their'compliance with tho statutory conditions. The Paliautanui branch of the Farmers' Union- tendered certain complaints' regarding the chargcs for driving stock seized ■ by the comity ranger. It'was decided to inform th« writers that an amendment to the Impounding .Act,.- to be ..introduced* this. session, would ,solve»the questions- raised. '. i > -. Mr. J. A. '.Fcilcl was informed that the Council' was riot prepared' to take up the culvert or-block the drain, ori his-property.. . It was decided, in response to a. petition submitted, to spend £5.0n the work of'draining the Beach Road. ; ' ; ' . :Messrs.' Buchanan and Monteith -were informed, in reply to their communication re-' garding Otaihaiiga Road, .that they need riot connect • with' the Old Main 'Road, but it would be riecesarsy to supply crossings. . It was decided to arrange >for a survey of the lino - of' the extension of the • Waiiiui Road forward into Orongorongo, in, tho'. estate of J. Ri'ddiford. '* „ .The Inspector's report', stated - that the county roads were,. generally, speaking, in g9pd .9rd.er for, this :time of the year. Certain repairs to culverts, metalling, repairs, arid renewals '.to the Belmont 'andi Silverstream bridges had been effected,' and active steps were -being ■ taken to.'improvo the unsatisfacof th'e road round tho bays. - The .contract.. for ,the Paliautanui public pound-.'had -been'-, completed, in "a satisfactory manner by' . Hansen; and Galloway; grants in aid'of works 'in the. Moonshine-dis-tricts-were commenced ori . June 25, twelve men ■ being. employed,' but similar undertakings:'in tho. Waikanae district were suspended owing to scarcity of labour; ten men wero at wonk on the Mungaroa section. The report was • adopted. . :
