During the recent meeting at Capetown of the South African Customs Union Convention Mr. Merriman (Premier of Cape Colony) and Mr. Fischer (Premier of Orange River Colony) supported the proposed abandonment. of tariff preference to the United Kingdom. Mr. Botha, however, declared that the abandonment wo|ild be calamitous when the United Kingdom was obviously working round to tariff reform and Imperial preferelico. Mr. Fischer then sided with Mr. Botha, and tho proposed abandonment of preference was r defeated.
