At ,a- meeting of Ardm'oro residents-held to ■ consider • resolutions submitted by the Clevedon Branch of the Farmers' Union'with regard to. the formation of a farmers' party in Parliament,' Captain Colbeck (vice-presi-dent •of the. Glovodon Branch) delivered an address) and a petition signed-by a consider- , able number of farmers/has been forwarded to .the. Union; executive at Wellington, requesting the immediate formation, of a farmers' party in Parliament.. Petitions to the same effect have been issued by the provincial executive to 640 branches of the Union in all . parts of the Dominion. The resolutions advanced > by the Clevedon Branch comprised the following planks:— Taxation for. revenue purposes . only, optional tenure of land, ratepayers only to be empowered to vote on local government matters ' ill county councils, road boards, and rural districts. ■ ;
A VOLUNTEER TROUBLE. Dunedin, July; 10. As a result of the recent trouble in the . North Dunediu Rifles, consequent on the Officer Commanding the District refusing to accept- Mrßenfield's appointment as Lieucharges of insubordination, were preferrod against four non-commissioned officers —Col-Sergt. • Harbour, Sergt. Kilpatrick, Sorgt. Bradley, and.Pte. Dippie. The chargcs were that they had put forward a resolution , reflecting on the action of a superior officer. The charges were dismissed on the ground of the participation of the- Officer Commanding the Company (Lieut. Begg) in proceedings resulting in'a serious breacn of discipline on the part of non-commissioned officers. Lieut. • Begg is to be tried before a Special 1 Court'of Inquiry to-morrow. Independent Liberal, announces his candidature in the Government interests at the general election," Which ia almost certain to be a triangular contest. Mr. C. E. It is understood that' Messrs. \Vhybrow • and Co., a well-known Victorian boot manufacturing firm; have purchased a . large area of land at the southern end of the city, and purpose erecting thereon an extensive boot factory. It is stated that the firm will bring its own operatives over from Australia.
