CRIMINAL CHARGES.
CLIFF MTJRDER. (bt telegraph—peess association—coptbight.) London, July 9. Following the recent abandonment' of the prosecution of MKJuire on a'charge of what is known as the Cliff murder,' at Bournemouth, M'Guire has been arrested for deserting from the army.
John Francis M Guire was in the Royal Artillery until 1905, when he passed into the Life Guards. In November, 1906, he adopted an assumed name to lodgings in Denbigh Street, Pimlico, and started as a picture dealer. of .Miss Emma Sherriff was found on a deserted cliff at" Southbourne neai Bournemouth,, on Ferbruary 18. On opening the murder case, Mr. Badcliffe, K.C., described M'Guire .and. Miss Sherriff .as, a ."rerv verv affectionate brother and sister." The ensa wi'c very involved. When the body was foS there .were two handkerchiefs in the. mouth • these had apparently been put. (hereto preyent. the girl crying out. Death was due to hemorrhage and shock. The whole of ons side was flattened m as though she had been kicked. BLACKMAIL. TEN YEARS FOR THREAT TO MURDER. . Berlin, July 9. . Imhof, an es-postal ©mployeo, was sentenced' to ten years' imprisonment at Munich for blackmailing a Bavarian millionaire. Ho made a threat to murder the millionaire's children successively until his demands were granted.
THE "CAT." ROBBERY WITH ■ VIOLENCE. London, July 9. Mr. Justice Darling, at- the Notts Assizes, dealt with a collier named Riley who had been.convicted of robbery with violence. -Remarking that the "cat" had been a great deterrent of crim'o at Cardiff since his visit a few months ago, his Lordship sentenced Riley to eighteen strokoa and six months' imprisonment,
