The above plan depicts the Panama Street elevation of the General Post Office, as it will appear when the new'building is completed. The present structure, of three stories, arid the intended addition, of five stories and a basement, are. here shown in sharp contrast. The new building is designed so that some day, when the present structure facing Customhouse Quay is demolished, a building may bo erected in its place which will form, with the elevations to Grey and Panama Streets, one harmonious block. The new frontage to Panama Street; here depicted) will be 128 feet, long, making,, with the length of the old building (68 feet), a total frontage of lG6ft. The height of the new building will be 100 feet to the top of the'dome (20 feet), that of the.present building boing about 60 feet. The main frontage of the new Post Office to Featberston Street will be 172 foet long, and, with the old portion that is to be conserved, .Wellington's Post Office will cover an area of 33,700 square feet. The present building covers less than 12,000 square feet. . /Briefly, the addition that .is being made to the Post Office will be about twice the sizo of tho building now standing, and ■ since' it will have two more stories, the future accommodation for the Post and Telegraph and Tourist Departments will be at least four times what was enjoyed by the Postal Department in the present building.
