MELBA MEETS TETRAZZINI.
Mme. Melba and Mine. Tetrazzini met in London for the first time in their lives on the eve of a gala performance at Covent Garden. They bowed, smiled, shook hands, heard each other sing, and applauded each other in turn. They met at noon on the stage of Covent Garden Opera House. Each went there to rehearse her role in the dual bill arrranged for the performance, and the two great singers were introduced by Mr. Percy Pitt, the musical director. Mr. Higgins and Mr. Neil Forsyth gazed on the scene from the stalls with wideeyed wonderment, as the "gueens of song" hold each other's hand. Not until it was discovered that they were quietly talking in . French about summer hats and directoire gowns did anyone summon up courage" to go on with the rehearsal. Mme. Tetrazzini sang some of the music of "II Pescatore di Perle," and Mme. Melba expressed her delight. Then Mme. Melba sang her " Faust " music. It charmed Mme. Tetrazzini. Covent Garden was like the home of a happy-family.
