_i The Young WomenY Christian Association is rapidly growing in size, and now numbers over 400 members all told. These include girls of every-employment, girls from shops, from workrooms and offices, and girls ivho work at home, as well :as'the woman of comparative leisure. The Association has fairly outgrown its present home, and at the end of the month it is moving to fresh quarters above Pringle's. It is to be hoped that this removal will at no very great time be folanother move to permanent quarters, and that the Association will soon bo able to buy or build for itself a large house •where it can offer a homo as well as recreation to its associates. , Mr., and Mrs. F. Horton Bright, and Mr. and Mrs. A. Bright, of Otaki, who are touring the world, have arrived in Paris, after a pleasant tour through Italy and Switzerland. On Friday afternoon an enjoyable concert wa,s given the Chronic Invalids' Home (Victoria Ward) at tho Wellington Hospital by the " Lady Plunket Centre'' of the' Girls' Realm Guild. The programme was arranged by Miss Adeline VToler-Curtis, l assisted by Mrs. Rigg and "Misses Violet Muller, Daisy and Ella Hurley, Toler-Curtis, Brune, and Jenkins. ' . Mrs. M. E. Denniston returned last night from a fortnight's visit to Palmerston North.
"Diet" was the subject of tho last lecture delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Gunn to members of the St. John Ambulance Nursing Division. The doctor dealt with sotno of the fundamental principles which govern the selection of suitable nourishment. Food was too often swallowed.in unmasticated pieces, and children not infrequently suffered from digestive disturbances through inattention to this. The child should be corrected, during oating, : of this bad habit. A hearty voto of thanks was accorded the ; doctor for her ♦excellent lecture. On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Grace gavo a small tea in honour of Lady Russell, who has been staying with, her for a week, and who loft for her again yesterday morning. A small and very; pleasant'little tea was given 'yesterday, afternoon by . Mrs. Jacob Joseph at Hobson Street. • The guests were entertained in the long double drawing-room, at one end of which was the tea-table artistic-ally-decorated with many coloured anemones, and hero the music of the afternoon was supplied by a lino pianola. Mrs. Joseph received in a handsome dress of .black. crepe-de-chino with velvet embroidery touched with gold on the bodice, and cream lace; Miss Joseph'woro black filet net with jet trimming; and Miss Elsie Joseph wore a pale green crepe-de-china dress with' braided bodice, with a yoke and sleeves of net. Among otners who were present were Mrs. Goring-Johnsten,'Mrs. Walter Nathan; and .'the, Misses Nathan,. Mrs. Brandon, Mrs. Cecil Kelibell, Mrs. ThomeGeorge, Mrs. Lan Duncan, Miss Coates, Mrs. H. D. Crawford, Mrs. A. Crawford, Mrs. Rankine-Brown, Mrs. and Miss Duncan, and Mrs.;, Moorhouse.
■There are to be special women's meetings in connection- with the Maori Congress to be'held in Wellington next week. The first to be held on Wednesday, July 15, at the Hotel Windsor tea rooms, when the subject for discussion will be "The Position of Maori Women, their needs and sphere of work; 1 care of Maori infants and nursing of the sick;, and training for domestic duties." At this meeting Lady Stout will give an outline of her proposals for the establishment of domestic colleges for Maori Girls. On Friday afternoon there will Tie another women's, meeting at the same place, when the question , .of, forming branches of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in Maori districts will be discussed, and following On that will be considered the need of having women to, work among the Maoris. On each occasion afternoon' tea .will. be provided for the delegates and visitors. The accommodation is limited, so,only delegates and invited guests will be-invited to these meetings. The Wellington Navals' annual ball, held in the Druids' Hall, Taranaki Street, last evening, was highly successful. About one hundred - couples took the. floor, and to tho. strains of_ Piatt's orchestra, spent an enjoyable evening. P.O. Hepburn and Gunners ■Flowers and M'Guire officiated asM.C.'s. His Worship the Mayor and Mrs.- Hislop attended during part of tho evening, and among the visitors were some of the Encounter bluejackets. The catering was done by Mr. G. Mawson, of Cuba Street.
The annual ball of the City Corporation employees was held in tho concert room at the Town Hall last evening, and proved a most successful function. About one hundred; and fifty couples were proseiit. During -the evening His Worship the Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) and Mrs. Hislop looked in, and in an interval betweon the dances the Mayor, on behalf of those' present, presented Mr. J. J. Kerslake, Corporation Works Overseer, with an illuminated address' and a Handsome gold seal and albert, as a, token of appreciation. Mr. Kerslake has just completed twenty-five years' scrvico with the Corporation. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. Dreyer, Green'and Headifen. The catering was excellently carried out by Mr. G. Mawson, and _ the music was in the capable hands of Miss Hawthorn's orchestra.
