Tho "Matin" tells an-extraordinary story of a transaction bctweeu a French clcrk and the Dank of Franco, which may or may not be true (says the Paris correspondent or tho London "Express"). \ By French law tbo Bank of France is < obliced to replace a damaged bank-note, the number of which is legible, by another. Somo years ago tho clerk inherited £800, which bo turned into twenty bank-notes of £40 each, flo proceeded to make, tlioso as disreputable as possiblo, and then took them to the ; bank, where he obtained now ones for them. Tho next day ho went back with tbo new bank-notes in 1 , the same dirty condition, and again bad them renewed. Ho did this every day except Sunday for three weeks. The matter was then reported to the Governor, who sent for tbo clerk and asked him why he behaved in such an extraordinary manner. "That is my business," was the answer. "Tho law gives me'a perfect right ; to exchange dirty bank-notes for clean ones half a dozon times a day if I like." "But overy new bank-note wo give' yon costs us ©iehtpenco. You aro costing us 13s. '4d. a day. "Exactly," said tho man. "I liaro a proposition t-o mako to you. I will promise to stop soiling bank-notes if you will agree to pay nrn 13s.
