UNITED STATES FLEET.
— p FRAUDS ON BAKERS. i THE COALING ARRANGEMENTS. (by TELEGRArn—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) ■ Sydney, July 4. The editor of tho "Pacific' Coast Gazette," .the official organ of the Californian. master bakers, has written to v the Australian .'.'Bakers' Journal" warning local bakers against the tactics of certain men who buy bread for sailors of tho American fleet and ge off without paying the bills: One Pacific Coast firm lost £120 in this way, and others 'lost smaller sums. ' 1 Thci British Monarch, from Baltimore, to coal, stho Amorican fleet at Auckland, has sailod from this port. The .name of tho collier is significant. A striking argument of the pro-subsidy party in America, who bewail the decadence of the United States mercantile marine, is that the American' fleet could not sail to , tho Pacifio .without dependence on hired foreign colliers to provide it witli the fuel of motive power. Now that tho fleet is in tho Pacifio, there are, it, is calculated, about two United States warships to one United States merchantman in that ocean.
