THE HON. J. RIGG AND LAWYERS.
The remarks of the Hon. J. Rigg on the elevation of practising lawyers • direct" to the Arbitration Court bonch have been the subject of unfavourable comment' as • a slight upon the 1 legal profession, and^doubt has been expressed as to what Mr. Rigg > really said. Ho has, however,, assured us that his , attitude was correctly expressed-, in. The Dominion, as follows:—'(Another ■■ mistake was to take practisingidawyerSj and, make /them; Presidents of,.;the- Court,-in. they would have'?before: them persons with whom they , had . just previously had clpse professional relations, ,An experienced Supremo Court Judge, such-as: it. jrasi'at: first ;ujid§rstood would always be selected for this most difficult position; would not labour'.under) the same disadvantage.- He thought, however, that the'legal mind was farfrom" a necessary equipment 'of an Arbitration • Court. President. A capable and suitably "experienced layman ; should make.a bettor President, though, as long as the President was an'.experienced. Supreme Court Judge; there was 110 dissatisfaction with the decisions of the Court." '
