SATURDAY'S MATCHES. The championship '■hockey matches wePft continued on v Saturday afternoon in perfect weather, with tlio following results:— United, 4—Karen, - 4. *• /Wellington,' 12—Victoria College, i. Wesley, 2-Y.M.C/A., 0. •. . ... Vivian, 7—Thorndon, 1. * , 'JNSTED v. KARORI. As was anticipated a very keen and hs teresting contest took' place between the.' Uniteil and Karori teams ori'No. 1 ground, Uay s Bay, and thero was a large attendance. Ihis contest.has been looked forward to with the. keenest of interest/ and - not a little trepidation by the players. The result was a draw, each side scoring four goals, but ' thoro was no doubt that the Karori .representatives had the. advantage, more so in tho second half, and they were more frequently " attacking than not. It was difficult, however, for thorn to penetrate tho defence of tho United backs, who always shine in that respoefc. Greater combination, was shown by:, tho Karori players than'by their opponents;' who seemetl to be very much out of form, , for they wero. constantly missing the ball or --failing to hit hard enough. .Some of the - United men had not been playing for. some weeks, and tljis,' no doubt, accounts to some, exteut for, their indifferent showing. -Not / withstanding' this, they worked hard' • all through the game. In the first spell,, their' forwards did not give their backs the necessary assistance, but in the latter half this defect was less obvious. Although both sidea '- were determined-, to succeed, the game'was , played .very cleanly. The Karori backs, with the exception of K. Spiers, a- promoted ' junior, played an excellent game. Tho forwards, also, played a good game, and so did the halves. Willis, on. the right wing, iwas very conspicuous*. . Of tho half-backs, -Camp- '■ bell, at centre-half, was tho pick. . Owing to the recent rains, -the ground was not" all that could be desired, but it'was better thast was expected.- : Karori Jiad the first advantage, and Willis took a shot; at goal, but it was stopped and went behind. Karori main- •- tained their attack, and "soon showed that they meant business, making the game very •; fast at times.' Organ (United) started on a ' , good run, and'passed"to Smy'the, who did '.'his' , best, but the defenders. took.. possession and sent the ball - down the field. ' After same ' very even' play, Karon'"tie-v camp dangerous; but the ball waa sent' up-field to Smyt-he,- who passed to Birkett. The latter had an excellent chance :to score, but he just missed .the. post. Shortly ' afterwards, ..Orgaii - secured possession,' , and passed to Hollis, who sent the ball between " tho posts. The- defending goalkeeper raised his. stick and missed tho. ball,; thus allowing ; Uniteds to ' score, whereas ho should have' stopped or kicked it. A few seconds later, the Karori forwards instituted.^'pretty rush,.' which carried them . right "through, arid 'Dairies equalised the scores. From'a corrieN. hit United territory, _a tussle ensued, ' ■and King (United) saved nicely from-threo-• 1 opponents, but shortly afterwards Davies' again got through tho defenders. From a ■ corner-hit, Organ centred nicely to Elliott, • ; who piloted tho ball between the posts. The score 'stood at : 2 all, when the whistle ■ sounded- for. half-time. _ Fro^n : the bully-off, " Karori; pressed determinedly and "Putnam scored. Then the lleds (Uniteds) got on-a - rush, arid Birkett: equalised, The only other two scores were made by Putnam (Karori) ■ ; and Elliott,:.(United). -From, this- out, tho . game became- more hotly fought, and, al - though Karori. had . tho better of, it, they ■ • - were, unable to increase their score, and the game ended in a draw,:each side, scoring four goals. Mr; C. Porter acted as referee.
