A friond of mine, who knows Caversham well, sends the names of five persons now figuring on the now electoral .'roll each of whom is dead, and ho believes, that others who havo paid tho debt of Nature are . also still on the roll. Two old settlers, both of Gorman birth, and fast friends for many years, died this morning, viz., Mr. Louis Mendelsohn (father-in-law of Mr. P. Selig, of Cliristehurcli), and Mr. F. Falck, who was for 'many years in ' I the postal service. • I Otago Central reports a very mild winter SO'fat'and splendid rains; Lord Plunket has purchased at Auckland an oil painting called "A Morning Pipe," by Mr. H. H. Pattle, 'of Diinodin, rfho has only been showing for .about two years.' Two eases of diphtheria, ono at Port Chalmers, where the child 'died, and tho other at South Dunedin, havo been traced to infection from fowls, and in each ease tho Health Department has ordered tho destruction of tho fowls. 11 ;'
