THE AMERICAN FLEET.
:.; Si r) _l see' by' tho papers 'that our Premier is'pushing to-get .'the North Island Main'. Trun.Jr. railway sufficiently completed to' •enable-our legislators'to travel by it td'see ■'the "American fleet' at Auckland. What is this "fleet? And iwhy the rush to see, it? I have'no doubt but what the vessels comprising it > arc'tho. finest that have been in these waters, and there is a great number of-them. As a sight it is well worth an effort to view it. But we'do not know tho. object the TJ.S.A. had in sending these ships to the Pacific. Was it a threat? or was it merely to show that she was able to do "it? AV'hy should we grind their axe? In my opinion too'much fuss is to bo made over this licet, and I. sec no sufficient roason for our legislators to fritter away'the country's funds'in making a; wild rush to Auckland. And would not our Premier show more dignity by staying here and deputing someone to receivo the Admiral, than by running after him. .1, quite admit some; courtesy is due' to tho Admiral.. By all means let tho I Amoricans come, and let Auckland entertain- them. : But let •it • end there.—l am., otc. •' 'v : JOHN C. BISHOP.
