In connection with the recent attack on the House of Commons, twenty suffragists at .Westminster Police Court were bound ovor, in security of £20 each, to -keep tho peace for a year, in default a month's imprisonment. Five were bound over in two securities of £25 each to keep tho peace for a year, in default three months' imprisonment; ono was bound over in' £10 to keep the 1 peace for six months, and one was discharged. Tho Hon. Charles Russell, in defending one of the women, contended that their opinions regarding the franchise wero tantamount to a religious belief; entitling them to imprisonment as first division misdemeanants. The defendants elected to go to prison. SIR JOSEPH CARRUTHERS. NO "ANTICS" ABOUT AUSTRALIAN WOMEN. . (Rec. July 3, 5.15 p.m.) London, July 2. Tho University of St. Andrews has conferred a Doctorship of Laws on Sir J. H. Carmthers,'ex-Premier of Now South Wales. Ho stated that experience had much modified his opposition to the enfranchisement of women, adding: "Tho women of Australia did not win tho franchise by resorting to antics."
