A surpriso visit was paid to Mr. and Mrs. Doughty, of Karaka Bay, by a party of young people from town on Thursday evening, and the result was a very jolly little impromptu dance, much enjoyed b,v the visitors and the visited. Mrs. Jameson chaperoned tho ■guests; among whom were tho Misses Jameson, Gear 1 (2), J. Reid, Holmes; and D. Bulkley, /•. and ;/ Mossrs. ■.'• Dudley, Richter, .Holmes, Smith, Day, Reid, and Shirtcliffe.
'Mrs.jHarold/Johnston gave a' very smart dirinor on Thursday night, when Mr. and Mrs. Algar Williams, Mr/ and Mrs.- David Nathan, Mr! and Mrs. Hoa,ion Rhodes, Miss Duncan, and Mr. Guy Johnston, wore present. Tho table was charmingly decorated
with, trails of smilax most artistically arranged, and with hothouse flowers in.silver vasjssl- Mrs. Johnston wore a frock of flamecoloured .satin with shoulder straps of mother of pearl, finished with gold fringe; Mrs. Algar Williams was in turquoise blue .satin, foiled with chiffon of the eamo shade, with gold lace worked in a Grecian pattern on bodice and sleeves; Mrs. David Nathan's frock was of white Russian over silver tissue, and with; this she .wore' a wreath of silvered green leaves in' her hair; Miss Dun'can,.' a. frock' ofjipalo' blue "'striped liinon de soiej, with .'touches of silver on the bodice; Mrs. Ueaton Rhodes,' frock of rick plum-col-■ oured silltj with shoulder straps of tho.'silk over .a bodico of Russian not, in • which a touch of bine was-introduced with tiny embroidered wings. With this was worn'a little mantilla of cream lace edged with pale blue silk.
In the Maori villages .in the Manawatu,' Wairarapa,' and Hutt, vigorous preparations arc-being made for tho Maori entertainment to be given in Wellington next Wednesday in aid of the, fund for omplojing nurses to visit the Maori women in their own homes.Children of ten, young girls, and women aro practising the poi dances, tho men are.prac-t-ising all tho hakas and all other dances, and the songs, Maori chants, and love songs which are''"to 'bo sung, and translations of which' will' appear on the: programme, so that the audience may appreciate and understand them. Sir. Parata, who is organising - the , entertainment, and arranging for tho Maoris to come to Wellington,' says that'already two nurses are employed in the Hawera,district. They have been through a course- at the Cambridge -Sanatorium, for they will dome across many cases of pulmonary troublo in their work, though they will also pay great attention to the carb of infants and training of the. mothers.- Hero they will do among Maori women very much •tho same work that the Lady Plunket nurses aro to do in the towns among all races. It is • very, important'work, and it is/.to. be hoped that , the entertainment in its aid will be very'largely attended. In course of tima nurses will be established on the Bast Coast, Auckland Province,, and the. Central District, but funds have yet to b9 raised. 1
On Thursday morning,' Belle, the nine-year-old daughter of :Mr._W.M. George, died of peritonitis, following" on a sudden -and .acuta attack of appendicitis. Mr. George is absent in Australia.' ; « " \
