The Hutt Valley s Licensed Victuallers' Association'met on Wednesday afternoon, when Mr. J.. Carey Fitzgerald was elected organising secretary to the Association. Thero wero somo sixty-five candidates for the position. Mr. Fitzgorald has had a lengthy experience in organising work. Latterly Mr. Fitzgerald has been connected with the Public Servico. Co-operative Association. Mr. Wm.'. Baxter., of Messrs. Baxter Bros., sawmillers, on the West Coast, has decided to become a resident of the Lower Hutt'. Ho has acquired interests-in -tho. Hutt Valley: Timber Company and the Hutt Valley Hardware Company. .. Mr. Baxter has a long-standing reputatioi. as a sportsman on tho West Coast.' •

The Lower-Hutt Dramatic Club gave its initial performance in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday night. The club staged tho three-act; farcical comedy, "My Dreadful Mother-in-law !" before a full .house. . .The same bill was presented,to another full house last night. The, long-looked-for Courthouse for .the Hutt,is.at length promising to come.into existenco. . Tho Government, is now calling for tenders for building. The Courthouse will bo situated in 'Laing's Road, just past the Post Officc, and will be of brick.

A meeting of officers and parishioners of St. James's Church was held on Wednesday evening, in tho parsonage, to consider what steps should be taken to bid farewell to the Rev. A.. H. Heron and Mrs. Heron on their departure for Cambridge, Waikato. It was decided to hold tho meeting on Friday, July 24, in the Sunday schoolroom.

Temporary accommodation for tho infant classes attending tho main District School is now. being arranged for.. Tho overcrowded stato of tho infants' rooms has'been, reported to the Board of Education by the local committeo oh soveral 'occasions,' and it is pleasing to noto 'that their efforts have had some effect.

Tho invention is of a very simple natnro, bejrig a brass tube split down 0110 side. This allows the tube to bo pushed into tho socket, of any ordinary-sized candlestick. and also enables the whole of tho caudle to be consumed.
