It is reported that the proposal to establish a co-operative dairy company at Ashhurst will be abandoned for the present.

An accident at Clarevillo yesterday, morni' ing deprived the Wairarapa of. one .'of its worthiest settlers, Mr. Jas. jUoncrieff. Mr. iloncrieff was watching tho topping of some pines, when a tree fell unexpectedly and fractured his skull. Mr. Moncrieff was born in !East Lothian, Scotland, in 1830, and arrived at Port Chalmers in 1884, accompanied by his wife and family. In February, 1885,. ho came to Waihakcke, where he resided until 1899, removing to Clareville in, that year, where he was living_ at the time of the accident. Mr. Moncrieff lived a retired life, nover seeking public positions, but.endeared himself to all who came in contact with him by his kindly sympathy and ready help. Mr. Moncrieff leaves a widow and "eight. children— four sons and four daughter's, the best known being Mr. Jas. Moncrieff, Town Clerk. At tho annual meeting of tho Fire the following officers ■ were elected:— Messrs. Chu-mley, captain'; E. M'Kenzie and \V. Campbell, lieutenants; F. Jackson, foreman; R.J. Chapman, auditor; W. Campbell, secretary and treasurer; Firemen Baillie,' Maguire, and Stove to act with the-officers-as an executive committee. ,

An afternoon tea was yesterday held'in the Town Hall, when n, large number of Anglicans attended:to participate and b'id Godspeed to the Rev. Mr;- and Mrs. Stealey, who take up duties at the Clareville Maori College on August 1. Occasion was taken to present Mr. Stealey with;a purse of "sov* and Mrs. Stealey with a valuable gold chain, studded, at' intervals'witli pearls,' and a morocco leather handbag of neat design. 1 Mrs. Simcox, senri, in making the presentation, referred eulogistically to the services rendered by both Mr.' and Mrs. Stealey, and regretted their departure.' Both recipients suitably replied. It is expected that the Rev. Mr. Smith, of the' Upper Hutt, will take up his duties here towards the latter end of August.' ■ . The weather has been depressing this week, and for the last forty-eight hours prior to 9 o'clock yesterday morning no less than 2} inches of. rain fell. At a reccnt special meeting of- the directors of the Levin. Dairy Factory, Co.; it'was shown that there were no fewer than 35 applications for the position of manager, vice Mr. Itcckoll, resigned. No final decision waa made. ■ ..

' ' MAGISTRATE'S COURT. • " A case of general interest was heard in the Magistrate's Court on Thursday; when H'.-, Cave, farmer, claimed from- Dalgety; and.' Co. the' sum of £106, half commission on tho sale of a property. Plaintiff, who introduced the'buyer, alleged that there was an under- : standing that' he should _receive half commission. It was not denied that Cavo had introduced the buyer, but the firm's local agent denied stipulating that plaintiff would, receive commission, though he promised Cave he would receive consideration. His firm had offered £10, which had been refused by plaintiff. It was contended that no (contract was' entered into, and that consequently, plaintiff had no legal claim. Mr. James, S.M., cen. curred, though ho said the 1 firm was inorfy-y bound, as it received £125 commission sale, sufficiently to remunerate pin t "■ 1 Judgment was given for defendar ■ ■ costs. The Bench later intimated thy ' gety and Co. offered to pay the plaif' 1 ! and forego costs. ■ . '• :6. M.' Dorncy and' Co., land'.i - , claimed £40 ;from H.! Bond, Hukaliui, ;";>r. commission on tho sale of a farm. The. evidence went to. show that Bond placed the farm in the hands of Dorney and Co. for sale, and they introduced a buyer, but negotiations fell' through. Later oil Bond withdrew the farm from the hands of Dorlioy and Co., and sold the property to the first buyer's father. Dorney and Co. claimed on this sale, as they contended they were instrumental ill bringing it about. For the defeuco it was contended that-the contract' with Dorney and Co.'to sell the land lapsed on their being asked to withdraw the land from sale, and tlioy had no.claim on any subsequent transaction.'- The. Magistrate reserved his decision. . '•At a special-meeting of the Eketahuna SchoorCommittee on Wednesday, Mr. A. H. Vile was nominated fc-r-the vacant seat on tho Education Board. '

The annual meeting of the Fresh Milk Supply Association, to have been held on Wednesday, lapsed for want of a quorum. A pleasant lonfj-night_ dance under the auspicbs of the Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday evening, when there was a fair attendance. The floor was in good order, and excellent music was played by Mrs. A. Burt (piano) and Mr. C. Burt (cornet). Messrs., C. : Lust and A. Higgison were M.C.'s. A light supper was provided. At Carterton yesterday tho Liberal Junior! v;ero defeated by Rovers by G points to 3.
