HARD TO HANDLE.

ALTERING NAMES OF TOWNS. PALMERSTON NORTH CITED. 1 Somo remarks of an interesting naturo resulted from a motion moved by. Mr. T. K. Sidey yesterday afternoon. _ Tho motion was that a committee be appointed to consider tho present nomenclature of places, towns, and geographical characteristics in tho. Dominion, with a view of suggesting alterations or improvements, and to report thereon to tho House, with power to call for persons and papers. Ho suggested a committee of 111110 members, including tiro Native Minister and tho Minister for Agriculture. Tho Primo Minister, referring to tho Designation of Districts: Act, said that power already existed to chango tho names of places duplicated, or to alter names if thought proper. But there had boon great opposition to this course in the past. It would hardly bo right for a committee to malco proposals to altor tho names of places without con-' suiting tho pcoplo of such places. People woro very sensitive ;on this matter.' If .the committeo intended to ask that their report bo given effect to ho would pint out what tho cffcct would bo. He recalled the caso of Palmcrston North and Palmerston South. A Member: There is no-Palmerston South. Tho Primo Minister: I stand corrected. Ho said that inconvonieiico had been suffered from tho confusion of letter and telegraphic addresses, yet when a proposal came up in tho House to change the namo of tho placo which was tho junior in age, tho matter was debated for a wholo night, and was finally thrown out. This was an instanco of general feeling. After other_ members had spoken, tho motion was carried. Mr. Sidey's reply was inaudible in tho Press gallery.

The Genitalis' and tho Scots arc the only people who will mako great sacrifices for their lovo of books. The Englishman has lost the inspiration which led his greatgrandfather in an earlier period to gather round him a fine library.—"Sphero."
