The Convention of tho AVomen's Social Political Union, held at Caxton Hall, deputed Mrs. Pankhnrst and twelve other women to carry to tho House of Commons a resolution in favour of women's suffrage. Police escorted tho deputation to tho entrance of tho House, where an inspector stated that tho Sergeant-at-Arms forbado the deputation to enter, as tho Primri Minister, Mr. Asquith, declined to receive them, suggesting that they should present a written statement. This was reported to tho Caxton Hall Convention, which forthwith prepared to invade tho Houso of Commons. A huge and uproavious crowd gathered in Parliament Square, and for two hours' watched tho progress of tho assault upon tho Houso. Tho demonstrators . appeared in detached parties, and tho police promptly excluded them from tho Square. Twenty-eight wero arrested after a series of scuffles. Another, in a boat on the river, addressed persons who wero on Parliament Houso Terrace. Later, two women in a taxicab, armed with bags of stones, wero arrested for breaking tho windows of Mr. Asquith's houso in Downing Street. . ' ■' Tho' proceedings of the 'Convention then became excited. Replying to Lady Grove's expostulatory remark that it was ■ notoriously illegal, to walk in procession to tho Houso of Commons, Miss Pankhurst explained: " Yes, John Burns discovered that ono sometimes must bo a lawbreaker beforo being a lawmaker. Wo are only one bl»ek sheep of a flock., Wo women arc going to win. Let it be beforo somo tragedy, beforo some injury to ono of theso women, has blotted tho page."
