Four thousand ono hundred and ninety-seven havo returned t-o tho islands. ' It 'hasi been stated—though the report' lias since boon denied by tlie Federal authorities— that returned Kanakas aro fomenting tho islanders against white settlers. The offieevs'of tho Upolu state that , the cry of tho returned islanders is "Tho white man would not have us in his country, a!ud we ivill rid our country of the white man." One, putting the ideal in another form, said, " You got a White Aiistralia; well,' wo'll give you a Black Polynesia.
