. — » IMPORTANT STATISTICS. A NEW RECORD. . For the first time in the history of.. Wellington the births registered during the first six months of the year have readied a thousand. This, the Registrar (Mr. G. G. Hodgkins) considers an important fact, showing the'steady, growth of population. It is worthy of note, perhaps, that the number is. just 1000, as against 950. for the. sanio period last year. The figures.for the halfyear ended yesterday are all the more, satisfactory because the deaths have only totalled 350 as against -120 for the first half of 1907. The Registrar, whose duty it-is to analyse and record the vital statistics, expresses much satisfaction over the improved figures of this year. He also rejoices in the fact that he has officiated' at fifteen more marriages this half than the first half of last year, and looks forward to the second half with perfect confidence, as official experience has taught him that the natural increase in the population is always more marked ill the latter half of the year.
