GERMAN EXPEDITION TO THE SOUTH SEAS.
A German expedition was to have left Hong-Kong during ,June for the Bismarck Archipelago, whence it will start on its labours: ' This expedition; '.which, has ■ been organised by tho : Hamburg Scientific Institute to carry: out a programme drafted by Professor, Thilenrus, is composed of the following gentlemen Professor Dr., Fuelleborn, assistant at the institute for'diseases on board ship and . tropical diseases, , who will act as .leader and physician; Dr. Dunoker, from the Museum of Natural History of Hamburg, who will takS, charge of tho collections of natural history,: Dr. Reche, departmental head of 'the' Ethnographical Museum; and' Dr. Mueller,' of Wismar, entrusted respectively with tho anthropological and ethnographical investigations; and Mr F. E. Hcllwig, who is to look after tho ethnographical collections. Another member of the expedition is , Mr. H. Vogcl, of Hamburg, who • will 1 act as photographer; and also execute all drawings. The steamer Peiho, a vessel of about 900 tons, having'a speed of. 12 miles, belonging to tho HamburgAmerican line, has been chartered by tho Scientific-Institute as tho exploring ship and provided with all equipments necossary for the voyage which, it is estimated, wij] extend, over two years. Thero will boa hospital on board in order to obtain material for tropical medicinal researches. Tho exploring ship .will bo commanded by Captain Vahsel, who acted as ono of the officors on board i the Arctic exploring vessel Gauss. The members of the expedition left Hamburg for the East during/the latter part of tho month.
