. ' , , ,• London, May 16. Mr. Francis Hutchens, a young New Zealander, who is studying at the Royal Aca•jemv of Music, has just Been awarded'tho Thalberg Scholarship ;for tho pianoforte. Ihis scholarship was .'founded in 1877 in memory of Sigtemund.Thalberg,. pianist and composer. It is open for competition bien- ; nially by female and male pianists, at alternate elections, who must be British-born subjects, between tho ages of 14 and 21 •years/ _ Competitors have to pass an examination in general education before entering xhe niusical competition, unless thev already 'hold a certificate of eitlior of tho University ■Local Examinations. The scholarship amounts •.to about £20 a year, : which is appropriated towards the' cost •of two years' instruction J . n J,. 6 4 c jdemy. The examination was held in -March last,. The New Zealand tenor, Mr. Charles Car-ter,-has been: figuring as the main attraction in the Moody-Manners' season of opera at the Crystal Palace, i Mr. Carter scored his principal successes iri' Wagnerian roles. _ Mrs. J. Steele, of Spreydon, and Mrs. AV. 8.. Clarkson, of Riccarton, Christchurch, aro on. a.visit to, England. They arrived by tho Cormthic on April 16, and after a day lh London they travelled to Masliam, in / lorkshire, Mrs. Steele's old home, where tlioy are' now staying with relatives. Later on they , intend touring through Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, and also on the Continent, if cime will allow. Tliey will also ; spend a; few weeks iu London to visit tho Franco-British Exhibition, and do some sightseeing. , ■Miss Ethel Dawson, eldest daughter 'of tho Into Dr. F. W. %, Dawson, P.R.C S and Mrs. Dawson, of Auckland, was married on April 29 to Mr. Spencer L. Bulkeloy, eldest son of tho lato Rev. R. G. Bulkelev vicar of St. John's, Diikinfield, Cheshire! and Mrs. Bulkeley, of Torquay.
