A SHORT SITTINC. , Tho first bnsiness of the Council was the receipt'of a Governor's Message, announcing that leave of absenco for tho session had been granted to tho Hon. G. J. Smith (Christ cnurek). : HON. C. LOUISSON REAPPOINTED. The Council was notified by Governor's Message that the term of office of the Hon. C. Louisson (Christchurch) had expired, and that his Excellency had been pleased to reappoint him for a further term. Tho Hon. C. LOUISSON, who was conducted'into the Chamber by tho .Hon. Dr. Findlay and' tlio Hon. T. Thompson, then took tno oath and his seat. THE LATE MR. BENNET, M.P. Tho ATTORNEY-GENERAL (Hon. Dr. Findlay) moved a resolution appreciative of the public services of • the late Mr. James Bennet, M.P., and tendering condolences to ]iis relatives. Tho deceased was characterised by Dr. Findlay as a man without ostentations qualities, but distinguished by loyalty to his friends, and a fixed determination of purpose, which enabled him to do, probably, as much for his district as any member of Parliamont. Tho motion' was earned in silonco.
