WESTLAND LICENSING COMMITTEE.
' I A NEW HOTEL. 1 (BT lELEOBAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HoUi'iika, June 29. At the adjourned meeting of the Westland Licensing Committee to-day an application for a new hotel called The Dominion—which, according to applicant's counsel, would be' up-to-date in every respect, and which application had been adjourned from, tho annual meeting for the presence of a member ;then absent, and on wliich previous occasion tho Magistrate refused to . adjudicate owing to certain' allegations _ appearing 'in local newspapers charging him with being an interested party in tho application — was granted oa tho casting voto of the Magistrate. In delivering judgment, tho Magistrate reviewed the position at length, aud, intor alia, stated that having traced the sourco of tho allegations against him ho could afford to ignore thorn. Ho would record now his vote, and thus giro effect to tho wishes of a largo majority of tho electors who at tho last local option poll voted for continuance of tho existing number of licenses. Tho granting of the application means that Hokitika, with a population of 2240, now has eighteen licensed nouses. It is probablo some of tho objectors will apply to tho Supremo Court for a writ certiorari to quash tno decision of the Licensing Committee.
