MASTERTON. ! A presentation was. made on Friday by his brother officials to Mr. D. Elliot, Relieving Inspector of Stock, who has recently been transferred to Hawera from 'the Mastertori office. A handsome case of; silver-mounted pipes, was given to Mr.. Elliot, the function being carried out by Mr. G. H. Jenkinson, District Inspoctor, who expressed the great regret .of the offioo staff at losing Mr. Elliot, and who. eulogised the recipient's work: during,his term of office in Mastertou. Mr. A. D. Gillies, abattoir manager, also paid a tribute to Mr. Elliot's efficiency as manager of the abattoirs. Mr. Elliot suitably replied. Ho left by the midday train on Saturday for his new office, and takes with him the good, wishes of a largo number of friends.
LEVIN. A pleasant little fuuetion took place at tha Levin" Post Office on Saturday afternoon, when the staff _ gathered together at tho office to present Mr. T. G. Vincent with a small token of their esteem, in the form df a silver-mounted oak inkstand, prior to his. leaving the service. Miss Boweu, who made, tho presentation, spoke in eulogistic terms of the good work done by Mr. Vincent sinco his first arrival at tho office about five years ago, Mr. Vincent suitably replied. ■
FEATHERSTON. At a meeting of the Guii Club on Frida; evening it Was decided to hold a handica] sparrow match on Saturday, July 4. Mr. A. ' Bale, intends removing to th( Hawke's Bay district at an early date. Quite a gloom was cast over the town and district when the sad news spread that Mr. F. Laurensen, tho well-known stock dealer, had shot himself at Tokomaru. Deceased, ■who resided at the corner cf College'and Alexandra Streets, Palmcrston North, visited his farm at Tokomaru on Saturday, and in conversation an employee appeared to be quite cheerful, and conversed freely. Ho opened the gate for an employee,' who was driving out, and then returned to the house, whore he procured a gun, with which ho took his life, placing the muzzlo of the gun to his mouth. Deceased was a married man, and was highly' resprcted. A handsoir.o forty-guinea cup has been presented to Mauawatu Boxing. Association for competition. _ .
