MEMORIAL TABLET.

At tho Sacred.Heart Basiiica on Saturday morning, a mural tablet, erected to tho memory of tho Rev. Father Lewis by tho parishioners of Thorndon, was unveiled.' The following was the inscription:—"ln memory of the Rev. W. .J. Lewis, 5.M.,V.C., Administrator of this Parish 1893-1907, anativo of Naas, Ireland. Tho deceased priost laboured in tho sacred ministry of New, Zealand for almost a quarter of a century with apostolic humility and, meekness, ardent zeal for souls, tireless devotion to work, and conspicuous administrative ability. Died Juno 27, 1907, aged 54 years. - 11.1.}?. Erected by his sonowmg parishioners." The tablet was designed by Mr. Swan and executed by Hickmott and Son. It is of Oamaru stono, with marblo slab and columns. Tho music at tho unveiling was rendered by tho pupils of St. Mary's Convent. Solemn requiem mass was celebrated by the Very Rev. Dean Rcgnault, Provincial. of tho Society of St. Mary, assisted by tho Rov. Father Venning as deacon and tho Itev. Father Bowden as sub-deacon. Tho absolution at tho catafalquo then took place, and tho music for this, and also for tho mass, was supplied by tho choir of inalo voices supplied from the members of tho Church choir. Tho clergy wero under tho leadership of tho-Rov. Father Mahony. Miss Putnam presided at tho organ.
