Republican's at Lisbon declare that tholato King Carlos and his family received from tho Government illegal advances to tho extent of £2,200,000. Advices dated London, May 25, stated:— "King Manuel, of Portugal, has transferred three Royal palaces to tho nation, in order to discharge tho indebtedness of his father, tho late King Carlos. He will also contribute an annual instalment towards tho same end." Later it was cabled that "stormy scones, occurred in tho Portuguese . Cortes oil tho discovery being made that tlio Dowager Queen Maria Pia (mother of tho late lung Carlos) owes the State <£200,000. The Dowager Queen explains that her allowance of .£12,000 annually proved insufficient to maintain her in Royal State."
