DEATH OF AN INFANT. . • i An inquest was held yesterday before Mr. W. P. James, S.M., into the circumstances surrounding the death'of tho infant child of E. Payne, of Miki Miki, on afternoon. Tho mother stated she was subject to fits, and on tho day of the child's death she had'two. In tho afternoon while alone in tho houso sho was dressing the infant, and feeling a fit coming on, endeavoured to lay the child ou tho sofa, but instead must have put it in tho fire, for when sho recovered sho discovered herself strctched across tho oven with tho child lying at tlie back of the fire burnt to death. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. A rider was added to the effect that it was most deplorable that women in such a state should be left alone, especially in chargo of children. At tho Magistrate's Court yesterday tho case of Hewitt v. Rossitor, a claim in connection with tho sale of a boarding-houso .at Cross Creek, decided in tho, Magistrate's Court on Thursday, was again brought on. Mr. Hollings, for plaintiff, applied for a rehoaring of the caso on the grounds of tho discovery of fresh evidence, which he was unable to obtain at tho hearing. The Magistrate heard counsel's argument, but decided that there was no necessity to rehear the case, as his judgment would not be altered by tho now evidence. Mr. Hollings stated that a jury would probably have.an opportunity of deciding the caso in the District Court. Tho annual social of the Garry Owen Hockey Club was held 011 Tuesday night, and was a great success, the attendance numbering about sixty couples. The orchestra consisted of Messrs. F. M'Kenssic, W. M'Lean, and J. Wisoman, extras being played by Misses E. Richards, O'Leary, O'Dowd* M. Harris, and Mr. W. M'Lean. Messrs. W. Spring, H. Richards, J. Dunn, and G. R. Thynne acted as M.C.'s. Supper was served by a ladies' committee. Misses M. Stenipa and M. Honrigan acted as secretaries.

The managers of the Masterton Teclnjical School have decided to appoint Mr. R. J. Foes, headmaster of the Upper Plain School, as instructor to the Civil Service class, vice Mr. C. N. Haslam, resigned. The managers have decided to insure the new school for £2000.

Severe depredations have been committed among the flocks of sheep-owners at'lvopuaranga by dogs, especially on the properties of Messrs. Bruce and Pharazyn.

A case of scarlet fever has occurred at Kopuaranga. • The patient, a young lady from Wavorley, will probably mako a speedy recovery. The house and its occupants have been quarantined by the Health Department.

Mr. R. Brown, President of the Wairarapa School Committees' Association, has been nominated for tlio vacancy on the "Wellington Education Board. ■ Kopuaranga has no J.P., and surprise is expressed that there was not one appointed in the new list.

FEILDING. Mr. J. Murray, manager of the Cheltenham Dairy Co., Leaves Feilding to-day on his' vacation, which he will, spend up the Main Trunk line. PAHIATUA. Tho congregation of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church -at a meeting held- on Thursday night gave a unanimous call to the Rev. Mr. Chalmers Mill, of Northcote, Auckland. Tho nominee is a young Now Zealander,_ who ■was trained in tho Dominion, and who is reported to possess considerable' ability. Tho AVoodlands Hunt Club run, which was postponed on Wednesday, last, owing to the Manawatu Show, was held yesterday afternoon. The weather, which had been showery, held off, and although, "owing" to the flooded state of the creeks, deviation from tho original course was necessary, "the, run was greatly enjoyed. Afterward members were entertained at afternoon tea at Mr. C. Avery's homestead. , . CARTERTON. Carterton's football scoro on Saturday was a curiosity. One of each kind of football scoro was registered—viz., a try (3), a converted try (8), goal from mark (11), penalty goal (14), potted goal (18). Tho Carterton Rifles ball was a great success last evening, in the Victoria. Hall. About 80 couples were present. Dancing was kept up to an early hour. SHANNON. ' Dr. Pomare, health officer, visited the town on Thursday. A meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board was held on Tuesday at Tokomaru. ■Tho weather here ■ has broken down entirely, and is cold and wet. So far the district has escaped serious flooding. It is not unlikely that the Anglican Church will have a curate, for the Shannon, Tokomaru, and Linton district stationed at Shannon. Footballers are delighted at tho inclusion of Tannahill in the combined HorowhenuaManawatu team, which plays tho AngloWelsh footballers on July 8. A local farmer had the misfortune to find five of his sheep lying doad a day or so ago, and discovered on close examination that they had been shot. Whether this is a result of the amusement of' would-be sportsmen, or whether it is an accident, has yet to bo discovered, though the latter seems most unlikely.
