MONTHLY MEETING. * .' . Tho i Wellington Education Board mot yesterday, thoro being present:—Messrs. R. Leo -, (chairman), J. G. W. Aitken, M.P., A. W. Hogg, M.P., A. H. Vile, J. Kebbcll, and W. H. Field, M.P., and Captain T. W. M'Don- ' : aid. , "' Finances.—Tho monthly statement of fin- ■ ances showed that tho debit balanco on tho Building and General Accounts amounted to £219 15s. 9d., and tho Secondary Account, £730 12s. Gd. On tho Manual and Technical ;;'. 'Account, Technical Accbuut, 'and Teachers' . Salaries Account, thore'was shown a total credit of £83G 19s. 4d.; while' the Deposit Account was credited with'£43 6s. There was a total credit ■ balance of £554 .2s. ' Sd., as ' against a debit balanco of £937 6s. lid. for tho previous month. Tho contract liabilities •' (including sites) amounted to, £3809 15s. 6d. Government Grants.—A grant of £50 for tho supply of a van for the conveyance of children to Te Horo School, and ono of £350 , for tho Secondary Department of tho Masterton school, wero received from the Government. Action regarding To Horo was" held over for tho" present. Junior National Scholarship.—lt was reported that F. Strafford, holder of a Junior National Scholarship, had not complied with the prescribed residential three years in tho Dominion—and could not, therefore, hold tho scholarship. In reply to ft question from Captain jM'Donald as to'why this candidate had beon' ; allowed to sit, it was pointed out that tho same examination entitled him to compete for a Board Scholar- ■ ship, regarding which this regulation as .to , residence did not apply; it was agreed that ; the candidate bo awarded a Board Scholar- . 6hip. . Te Ore Ore School Cadets. —A letter was received from Lieutenant Pubara To;Tau, of the Mastcrton: Mounted Rifles, in which tho. writer offered to supervise tlio teaching pf riflo shooting to the cadets ■ at- To Ore Ore . school. Captain M' Donald said ho had visited the school recently, and was of opinion that the request of the School Committee was .an urgent ono —tho 'state of the grounds as regards drainr age, etc., was, disgraceful. It was decided • to refer the . matter jto • the Financo Com? jnittee, with a; recommendation that the Clerk of Works be instructed to inspect tho. : ■ grounds, and report upon requirements: • Scholarship ' Holdor. —Consideration was given to a report on tho conduct of a scholarship holder. Karori Side School: Upon'tho Inspector's recommendation, it was decided that, subject to tho approval of tho School Committeo concerned, tho side school at Karori bo closed, and the children at present attending there bo conveyed to the Main School. This step is considered advisable in view of the decline' in tho attendance at the sido school. Matarawa: As tho proposal for the removal' of tho Matarawa School to a new site does not meet with tho approval of the lcaal School Committee, it'was decided to aba7idon the idea, and effect-certain improvements to the building as it stands ,at present. Tho Clerk of Works to visit and report. Mount Cook School: Fresh applications aro to bo called for the appointment of a female assistant teacher at "Mount Cook School, tho previous appointeo having.obtained'a position elsewhere. . , , '

Deep-Breathing Exercises i In response to numerous requests , that - 'lessons on deepbreathing bo given at l'ahiatua, the Board agreed to a proposal that Mr. ltoyd Garlick, whose instruction classes ha'vo. proved: so popular at Masterton, should givo threo lessons at Pahiatua. Manual and Technical Instruction: Somo discussion arose out of tho reading of a memorandum from the Auckland Education Board with reference to school classes in manual and technical instruction. Tho Auckland Board protested against the reductions, recently gazetted, in the grant per capita for classes in cookery. Tho Board's sccrotary (Mr. G. L. Stewart) 'explained the position, which was tha't tho capitation had been reduced from 15s. to 12s. Gd. for the cookory classes. Against that was an 'ncrenso of 2s. Gd. in tho capitation, graut for instruction in agriculture.. It was explanod that even under tho 15s. rate, cookery classes in tho ooum.-y had been run at a slight loss. Mr. Stewart suggested that tho matter might bo referred to tho Technical Education Board's in tho Wellington District for expressions of opinion.' The Auckland Board aosired tho co-operation of tho other Boards regarding the matter, but tho Wellington Board was differently placed as regards technical education, as control of such education was largely vested in the technical boards.
