At present, a good many New Zealand ports- ! &re being visited with heavy weather. Reports from Blenheim, yesterday were to' the ofiect that a heavy sea was running on tho bar there, l'rom Onehunga come tidings that tho Union. Company's steamer Rotoiti, which left there' on. Wednesday afternoon for New Plymouth,'was unable to.cross the Manaknu Bar till after nine yesterday morning. She was fixed toJeavo Xew Plymouth at 11 o'clock last night for- VYolhngton. On Tuesday' night' tho coastal trader Jane Douglas left tho Wollineton; wharf for Hokitikn. She, however, remained at anchor insido the Heads , till' 11 a.m. -yesterday, wheni the voyage was rosumed. Advices received by tho Union Company from tho W ost Coast state that heavy weather is being experienced there. Tho sicaincrs Waipori and Kfutangata, which were to leavo Westport for Wellington on Tuesday and Wednesday nights respectively, arc still detained in conscqnenco of the weather. Tlio report said that as the sea at Westport was increasing, thoro was little hope of dispatching the s tea mors last night. At Groymouth matters aro much the same. Tlio Jlapourika entered there yesterday morning, and it was expected there, would be no further movements that day ȣ the 6ea on the bar was getting worse:
THE WAKANUI. The Now Zealand Shipping Company advise that the steamer Wakanui will leave Wellington on Monday for Wailara aud Auckland, and is to' sail finally for London from tho latter port on July 7. THE AEAHURA. Intending passengers by tho Union Company's steamer Araliura for Picton, Nelson, and West Coast on Saturday, aro notified that her time of sailing has boen altered to 5.30. p.m. Tho alteration is made with a view to allowing passengers an opportunity of witnessing the i socond test match. CHINESE AS SAILORS. ' The announcement made' bj' Mr; Winston Churchill, President of tho Board pf Trade, that it is intended to stop the increase of Chinese senmon in ports of tho United Kingdom by a language test or other means has been much discussed in shipping circles here (says the "Sydney Morning Herald"). It is doubtful if the action contemplated will affect any of tho lines trading to Austria, but should the Board of Trade extend ti.o operation of the new stringent regulations to all vessels flying tho British flag, or to those registered in England, probably tho number of Chinese employed on the different lines of steamships trading between Sydney and the East will be restricted. Chinese aro carried by the E. and A. S.S. Company, by tho China Navigation Company, and by Burns, Philp, and Co.'s Eastern steamers.
SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. An exchange says that Whilst the steamer Carrigan Head was discharging at Adolaido a couple of weeks ago, several bales of brattice cloth were found to have, ignited, and,- though the material had only smouldered, it was evident that its composition was such as to render it a source of danger. The matter was reported to tho Marine ' Board, and the Government Analyst (Mr. W. A. Hargreavcs) examined the goods, and subsequently reported to tho effect that the cloth, which was destined for Newcastle, consisted of two kinds of material— brown .and white in colour. Both wero of hemp or similar fibre, but while the white was impregnated with saline matter and non-in-flammable the brown was treated with wood tar and was easily inllammabio. This was obvious from the fact that several bales in'different parts of the hold had taken fir-} spontaneously. The fire had originated in tho centre of each bale. The material had a tendency to heat in the same way as tow, tarred rope, and, tarpaulin, and tho danger was heightened by contact with moisture. Whether tho cloth had become moist in transit was questionable, as tho'material was; closely rolled up and surrounded by hessian. i Possibly it was damp when rolled up. In any case, however, it was. dangerous, and should be placed close to tho. hatches and easy of access, so that it might bereadily romovablc. A copy of Mr. Hargreavo's report is- to bo forwarded to the Board of Trade. .... . : '

Thence she proceeds to Newcastle to load coal for Kaipara, and after discharging will return to Sydney with' another cargo of timbor. An oxchange says that while tho American fleot.-.js ill Auckland in August it is evidently intended to coal the vessels with 'Americanfuel.
