Tho following civil cases went by default for plaintiffs:—F. Smith v. W. G. Somorville, claim £71 155., costs £4 55.; P. Dixon v. 13. 'Wilton, claim £2, costs lis,; A. Donald v. W. Higgs, claim £5, costs 15s. 6d.; W. Cragg v. P. Kirkby, claim £3 os. lid., costs 55.; same v. B. Young, claim £2 175., costs 55.; Hoar and. Pormain v. T. Carroll,_ claim 165., costs ss. A caso in connection with the sale of a boarding house occupied tlm forenoon, and in tlio afternoon the plaintiff, Arthur Henry Howott, settler, of Lansdowno, sued W. J. Rossiter, lato boarding-house, keeper, of Cross Creek, for £150 damages for alleged trespass, or in tho alternative £55 55., which it was alloged had been agreed to .bo paid by defendant to plaintiff, and, in addition, £50 damages for trespass. Mr. P. L. Hollings appeared for plaintiff, and Dr. Trimble for defendant. After hearing evidence the Magistrate entered' a non-suit .rrith costs. 'Notice of appeal was given.
OTAKI. The nowlv-formed Otaki Bowling Club has elected the following officers for the coming soason:—Patron, Mr. W. H. Field, M.P.; president, Mr. T. O'Rourke; vice-president, Mr. Skorman; secretary, Mr. Smith; treasurer, Mr. J. D. Howell; committee, Messrs. Farmer, O'Reilly, Staveley, Stevens, and Williams. The committee hopo to start play on tlio now green early during the approaching soason. Mrs. 0. J. D'Ath, Misses Daniel and Jacob,, and Messrs. Cockrill and Ponn have been appointed a sub-committeo to revise the special prize list for the Horowhonua Horticultural and Industrial Show Tho spring show is to bo held on November 18. and the autumn show on March 31 and April 1-. On Wednesday night, at the Druids' Hall, tho children, attending tho Anglican Sunday School gave an entertainment,, after which the Rev. H. T. Stealey showed several lantern slides; and Mr. C. Jones gave graphophone selections. ' During the evening Mrs. Stealey was .presented, on behalf of the Sunday School teachers and children, with a gold-' mounted greoii stone brooch. ' ,A number of local residents leavo hero tonight and to-morrow morning en routo for Wellington to witness tlio second test match. It is generally thought hero that the New Zealandors wiil have an easy win. The weather for tlio past week has been cold, and on several days frosty, with heavy rain on Wednesday and showers yesterday.
' FEATHERSTON. A meeting was hold here oil Wednesday ovening when it was decided to form a gymnasium club. Mr; 11. Stewart was elected secretary, and Mr. J. Higgison treasurer. A committee of management was appointed as follows Messrs. L. Higgison, H. Hughes, Tait, T. R. Aickin,. T. Tidswill. ' It' was decided to try and arrango for Mr. A. E. Harvey to act as instructor. ." ' •Mr. W. Benton presided at tho monthly meeting of tho School Committco on' Wednesday evening, when capitation amounting to £10 3s. was received. Mr. W. C. Buchanan wrote in answer to a question regarding subsidies on donations and subscriptions, stating that if they wero for a spccial purposo tho subsidy would bo applicable. . Ho. would make-further inquiries at tho next meeting' of the Board. A circular was received from tho Minister for Internal Affairs, asking that ■ i uly 22 . (Arbor Day) be 'observed by treeplanting *on public reserves". Mr. A. FT. Vile was nominated, for the Wairarapa Ward of tho Wellington' Education Board.' Mr: M'Allum, if tho local . railway staff,' has recoived n'otico of his transfer to Wellington,' and will bo replaced here by Mr. H. J. Godfrey, from Waipukur^u.

Tho Nireaha Co-oporativo Dairy Company, on Juno 20, paid out Id: per lb. for butter supplied during tho season; It is not usual for' tho ,company to pay out at this timo of the year; as a rule, Bd. is paid out till tho end of tho milk supply, and all tho bonus is paid out at annual .meeting. Tho death . occurred at Hamua of Mr. Avory's two . years and a half old boy, on Saturday last. The funeral took placo on Tuesday. Tho lad contracted pneumonia, and died very suddenly. . A familiar pieco of bush near Hamua, on Mr. Cavanagn's property', has just fallen a victim to the sawmiller. Tho bush will'be remembered as a lovely patch on tho old North Coach' Road, almost opposito Hamua. Quito a number of now buildings are being orected at Nireaha, including tho now school, teachers' residence, and a dwelling for tho managor of tho Nireaha Co-operativo Dairy Company. " MARTON. At the Hunterville Court yesterday, before Messrs. Bull and Brooker, J.P's., Alan B. Hogg, chemist, was charged -with uttering a valueless chequo for £1 to J. F. Perry, auctioneer, in payment for a tablo top. Evidenco was given that accused, in giving tho chequo, stated that lie had a balance of £100 at tho Union Bank, Wanganui. ' Tho bank officials testified that lie had no account at Wanganui since 1903. Accused pleaded guilty to the chargo, explaining that the offence was committed while ho was under the influence of alcohol and morphia. Tho Justices took a lenient view of tho case, and fined accused £10 and costs, and issued a prohibition order against him. At a sitting of tho Assessment Court at Marton yesterday a largo number of objections wero lodged, and in most cases reductions, in the-capital and unimproved values •were made. CARTERTON. .
