Tho Borough Council, met on Tuesday, and decided to strike a general rate of 2Jd. in the pound to cover an estimated expenditure of £5053. Lengthy reports by the Borough' Engincor and gas manager were adopted'. :' The annual returns for the second year of tho, Masterton Abattoirs, ended- May - 31," show that 1913 cattle and calves; 9325 sheep and lambs, and 1100 pigs were slaughtered. ,'l'he-totals for-the various months wore:—;' Juno (1907), 1201; July, 995; August, 1067; September, 1023; October, 965; November, 1022 ;• December; 816; January (1908), 985; February, 1045; March, 973; April, 1120; May, 1258; Juno, 1069;' making grand total •for year of 12,338 animals passed through tho worts. The grand. total for . year; 1906-07 was 13,753. This'means' that einco the abattoirs were oponed 26,091 animals have gone through" tho butchers' hands. The animals" condemned* were as follow: —Wholly—24 cattle* and 51 sheep and lambs, 9 pigs; partially—37 cattle, 24 sheep, 13 pigs. Mr. W. E. Bidwill, of Fcatherston, has donated £25 towards the Solway Showgrounds fund. ; At ; a Morris-tube Association meeting on Monday night considerable interest was shown in the match for first "leg in" for tho president's trophy.
