THE DAIRY COMMISSIONER
MR. CUDDIE RETURNS. HIS EXPERIENCES IN THE OLD / COUNTRY. ■ Mr. D. Cuddie, Dairy Commissioner, who has been on an official visit to Europo in connection, with tho Dominion's dairy exports, returned, by tho Moeraki from Sydney yesterday.^
In: a brief, chat -with a Dominion representative, lie said: — "Although 1" have had what I consider, a successful,.trip to': the Homeland, and have been able to collect a good deal of information in regard to'dairy matters, I am. very filad to get back to Now Zealand. I. arrived in London at a time when the largest shipments of New Zealand dairy produco were being placed on the market, which gave me a very good, opportunity of seeing how our produco opened up and compared with tho butter and cheese from other countries. Tho merchantsywho' handle New Zealand . dairy produco gave, jne', every facility to examine and inspect it ' at their various stores and warehouses.,' I,found them all very willing to discuss the quality of tho different consignments coming forward fortnightly from Now Zealand and to. point out to me tho kind of and cheese which best suited the Requirements of their numerous customers. Part of my time was spent in calling on the produco .merchants in Bristol, Cardiff, Manchester, and Liverpool, where a fairly large quantity of New _ Zealand butter and cheese is sold. 151 addition to meeting tho wholesale mere]tan is, I came in contact with quite a number of. those who retailed New Zealand dairy , produce. I was fortunate in being i able to spend a few weeks in Denmark, where i saw a good deal of the dairying methods - adopted in that country. I found the Danish people most willing to show me through • their butter and cheese factories and over tho farms which I visited." The Commissioner left London at the end.of April,: and returned by way of the United States and Canada. - While iri Canada, Mr. D. Cuddie met Mr. J. A. Ruddock, the Canadian Dairy Commissioner, .who-is very well known in New Zealand; "Mr. Ruddock," said Mr. Cuddie. was kind enough to put mo in tho way of seeing as much. as possible in tho limited time at my disposal." The Commissioner Will report the result of his investigations .to the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. R. M'Nab). OUTSIDE TESTIMONY. A member of a London produco firm Ovhoso local representatives supplied Mr. Cuddio, Government Dairy Commissioner with a letter of introduction to their people on his leaving Wellington) wrote, in tho course of a private, letter:— " I have' to thank you for introducing to us such a white man as Mr. Cuddie., He is the first dairy expert and commissioner we hayo mot from Australasia to whom wo felt we could frankly unbosom ourselves. It only wanted, a ftiw minutes' conversation with him -to;realise that hero at last wo had a man to whom wo could speak with absolute frankness. What, little we could do to assist him was cheerfully and gladly done; Your Government is fortunate in having him, and I shall be greatly mistaken if lie does not make his mark." ' \.
