NATIVE UNREST.
• PREPARATIONS FOR FIGHTING. BT TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPTIIIOHt. Sydney, June 23. . A prominent resident of tho Solomon Islands is visiting Sydney.. He attributes the recent unrest and'outrages to lack of proper administration. No attempts are being made by-officials, ho, says, to check preparations the natives aro evidently making to harass the whites. The building of a war canoe, which was abandoned somo years ago, ,has beon resumed. " There is great activity among tho islanders, who are well supplied with arms and ammunition. A punitive expedition landed from ,the warships was practically useless. ,Ho attributes much' of the trouble ,to returned kanakas, who have contracted many of tho whito. man's worst habits and few of his virtues.
The southern islandsof th'e Solomon Group— which was discovered by Mendana in 1568—belong to Great Britain, under an agreement signed with Germany in April, 1888. Tho northern isles belong to Germany. Choiseul and Isabel, with surrounding isles, were ceded to Great Britain on November 8, 1899. Tho Solomon Islanders have committed many outrages, notable among them being that of August,' 1896, whon Baron Foullon, Austrian scientist', De Beaufort, a midshipman, and twb sailors! woro massacred by tlie Natives at Guadalcanal
