Wil- . ford, counsel .for the Union Company, in a v . charge against three firemen, heard in the Magistrate's-Court yesterday. .Counsel informed,'the: Court that this .question had become ■ a very serious one from* the poinv _ or view-of. the vUnion Company, and the ' Harbour Board, and lie had been specially requested by the Union. Company to ask his Worship to help in checking the "alarming grdwth of this potty thieving. For the , last- three .months—March to May—the ■Union; Company alone had had to meet losses''estimated at £109 3s. 3d. 1 , the items 1 . including: salmon, : pears, whisky, herrings, potted meats, football bladders, emulsion, wine,, boots, . silk, .skirts, jujubes,• polish,, lihirts, and other miscellaneous goods. This was for the port of Wellington alone. The •Harbour Board had lost as much-as £40 'in ono month as.the result of petty thieving and. pillaging; and tho position was such '• that something, should bb done to check the abuse. Scarcoly a day passed that complaints were not received from "shippers or , consignees of' cargo.
