DETAILS OF FORMER WINTER SHOWS. Tho first winter : show organised by tho Manawatu A. and- P. Association, whoso 1908 show will be opened to-day, was held from- July 28 to. 31, .1903; and was oponod by His Excellency, the ' Govornor Lord Ranfurly. Tho undertaking wa3 an unqualified success.- The profits amounted to -.£lßo,' of which £55 lis. 4d. was handed to tho.. Poultry Association as its shure. Mr. C. 0. Cameron, New Zealand Produco Commissioner in London, was pros.ent, and , delivered . an' address., on tho Btato of tho butter..on arrival at Home.'
Tho second winter show was held in June, 1904. To .provide, additional covered space a poultry pavilion and; another hall were Greeted, but oven then-the accommodation was fully taxed. The receipts this year amounted .to £1250 Bs. 10d., and tho expenses (including prizes, £.358 Bs.) to £1126-3s. 3d. The'third winter dhow was held from June '20 to 23, 1905. , The two handsome 25-guinea challenge cups of, ,tho New Zealand Shipping Company and the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company were received this year, and tho horticultural section recievod . medals of the Royal Horticultural' Society. The. show receipts (including gates £810) amounted to £1290 13s. lOd. The expenses (including prizes, £389 4s. Bd:)'were £1031 ss. 3d. At 'the fourth show, in 1906, tho butter and cheeso exhibits numbered 163, as com--pared with 42 of threo years back. Messrs. Weddel and Co., London, donated a 25-guinoa challenge cup for this next show. < Mr. S.. M. Lnxford gave a magnificent silver .challeilgo shield, to be won three times.' Prominence was givon to th'a products of school gardens, and . free "admission was granted to school children'. ■ An - address an school gardens was delivered by Mr. \M. Murphy, F.L.S. , Classes for fat sheep and pigs wore instituted for. the: , first time,- and hiace a good display. It was resolved to provide classes at the next show for sheep suitable for freezing. The Manawatu Poultry Association had decided to pay' off tho liability due to tho A. and P. Association, and terminate tho existing , arrangements. Negotiations for the future, working of the two Associations on - a satisfactory basis failed, and ithe A. and P. Association resolved to control its own poultry'shows for the future. Tho show receipts were £1208 3s. 5d., aiid the expenses £1118 Is. 6d. /
The fifth show, in 1907, was .held from ' June 18 to 21.' The gate receipts were £612, exclusivo of members. Excellent results wero achieved, in.r the. dairy,; classes. In one class alone 48 dairy-factories exhibited. For tlio first timo/'the' Department' of. Agricult-uro ..made a very complete, arid interesting educa- ■- tive display .. of products : .from the various experiment, station's,. ..and. other '.exhibits'. • The exhibits of fat' sheep : and nigs decreased from • 117- iti '.1906 to 107. The poultry section did not'attain the success of former years. : A feature of the Dairy Conforenco was the reading of prize essays on "Butter •'Making, in Now Zealand," for prizes- presented by Messrs. Beattiq, Lang, and Company, on behalf of Messrs. Lovell and Clirist.mas, London. Further accommodation was Been to be required. The Department of Agriculture was 'restricted 'to-about half'the ' Gpaco needed. The necessary accommodation has since' been added.' ' Tho ' show receipts were' £1167. 9s. Id;, and the expenses £999 Ss. 9d.
For the show this week, .Dominion Championship prizes for butter and cheese aro being offered by the New "Zealand Butter and Cheese Factory Managers' Association. '.
