PETONE BOWLING CLUB. Tlio animal mooting of the Petonc Bowling Club was held on Saturday, Dr. ltoss, president, being in the chair. 'J'ho report stated -that the year commenced with a credit balanco of £20 19s. 3d., outstanding liabilities amounting to £300, aud assets £-181 12s. Id. A sum of £25 had been paid off the club's mortgage. Dr. Ross, in moving tho adoption of tho report, said that, though they had had eomo very heavy expenditure during tho year, it was very satisfactory to seo that they had a surplus of £198 10s. 7d. Tho report and balance-sheet woro adopted. Tho following officers wore olectcd for tho ensuing year:—President, Mr. R. Wylic; vice-presi-. dents, Messrs. A. Cowio and A. Carter ; secretary, Mr. R. F. Smith; treasurer, Mr. Castle"; committee, Messrs. A. C'oles, W. TJdy, Southgate, AV. G. Henry, W. Maralen, and Dr. Harding; auditors, Messrs. Wilkinson and E. Jones.
Dr. Ross moved that Rule 10 be altered by deleting the words,'"the entrance fee shall ho taken on account of tho first year's subscription.":—This was carried. Ho moved also—"That matches for tho Club Ferns start at 2 p.m., and that a holder of same lie ineligible to compete for any other challenge trophy."—This was carried. An amendment by Mr. Castle, to hold tv.-o matches in tho afternoon, was lost. On the motion of Mr. Coles, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring president (Dr. Ross). .
NO-LICENSE LEAGUE. 'A successful open-air meeting in connection with the No-License movement was held in the Main Street, Petone, on Saturday evening, whon Messrs. W. J. Macderinott and A. R. Atkinson addressed a good crowd. Mr. Macdormott, who hails from the Grey Lynn district, where they have secured No-License, was tho first to speak, and said that there, were now seven, shops' selling useful' articles iii placo .of the hotel closed. Tho people in the electorate mostly owned their own residences, and no one, ho said, wished for tho restoration of licenses. He concluded with an earnest appeal to tho fathers to. vote for No-Licenso for. tho sako of tho. boys, who were, ho declared, both the mainstay and the victims of tho "trade." Mr. A. R. Atkinson, of Wellington, and who has recently been gathering information first hand in Ashburton, touched upon tho economic sido of tho question. Mr. Townsend pointed out in reference to a recent political speech, that they intended to. support or oppose no candidate, and they were not called, upon at : tho ballot to decide' whether they were Prohibitionists or Colonial Optionists, but whether No-License was better than License. ' Questions were asked and_ answered. Next week an open-air meeting is to bo held in Lower Hutt. - • • •'
Tho Hutt Borough Council will hold a spccial meeting this evening for tho purpose of passing tho brick area by-law. Tho ordinary meeting of tho Council will follow immediately on the conclusion of 'tho spccial mooting. Tho work in connection with the improvements to tho Main Stvcet, Lower 'Hutt, arc already in a forward state... The street has been raised in tho centre from 15 inches in some levels to 9 inches, and will thus restore tho crown of the road to its correct lovel. In connection with tho School Committee's report to the Education Board, with reference to over-crowding in the district school, authority has .been given by tho Board for tho Committee to find temporary accommodation, and report to the Board. Accommodation suitable for tho purpose is hard to obtain,.. so that: difficulties may 1 arise; in. tho direction of the proposed attompt to rcduce the over-crowding* in the-lschool. A meeting of smglo-taxers was held in the Town Hall,- Lower Hutt, on Friday night, tho Rev. Mr. Knott in. the,chair. .Tho discussion boro largely on tho social questions of tho day. Mr. Edward C. Evans, of Wellington, opened tho discussion with an address in support of tho single-tax proposal, which, he contended, would bring about a just distribution of wealth, yhile giving-per-fect economic: freedom 'to the- workers. Mr. T. Townsendj on bohalf of tho Socialists, replied to Mr. Evans, and contended that a single tax levied on land, or on anything, would fall on tho workers. The discussion was continued by Messrs; E. T. Evans, E. Whittakcr, Adams, and others. A' resolution in favour of single tax was put to tho meeting and rejected. Mr. Albert Dryden, tho popular secretary of the local Good Templar Cricket•• Club, leaves this evening on a, holiday trip to Australia. , ' ,
The ..usual weekly meeting of tho King's Coronation Lodgo of Good Templars was held 'on Friday evening last. Bro. S. Shaw presided. A good committed was set up to mako arrangements for the forthcoming anniversary. Bro. C. Ralph and Sister P. Beid' were elected to fill the vacant offices of C.T. and F.S. respectively.. '
