Schemes for tho irrigation of Otago Central were discussed. Dr. Cbapplo has arranged for a meeting at Alexandra on Monday night on the same subject. SHIPMENT OF SALMON CONDEMNED. Dunedin, June 20. Two thousand four hundred tins of British ' Columbian salmon were condemned by tho Health Department this week, and destroyed within afew hours of seizure. Tho bulk of tho consignment was blown. ALLEGED ROBBERY. Auckland, June 20. Two elderly men—John M'Kenvin and Thoa Anderson—were caught by a nonstable early this_ morning 'in the act, it is alleged, of' leaving a butcher's shop carrying moat in 1 kits. _ They wero charged with breaking and entering and theft at the Police Court, and remanded on substantial bail. CHEMIST'S MATRIMONIAL AFFAIRS. ' Hastings, June 20. v William Matthews, describing himself as a chemist, aged thirty-four, pleaded guilty to making a false declaration to tho'Registrar of Marriages, to tho effect that his first wife. was not alivo, was remanded to tho Supreme Court for sentence. Prisoner, who admitted committing bigamy,, said ho was drunk at tha time.

Mr. Fitzhorbert, S.M.j gave reserved judg. ment this morning in a case against John Mynott, for a breach of the Printers and Newspapers Registration Act .by distributing -a paper not bearing an imprint. Defendant was tiued £5 and costs. , NAPIER HIGH SCHOOL. Napier, June 20. A deputation representing the Boys' High School waited on the Hon. J. A. Millar laßt night to secure his co-operation in urging on the Government to erect a new school. 1 Th« present; building is a ramshackle structure erected in 1872, is inconvenient, and the accommodation is far too small to meet growipg requirements. The Minister promised'to lay tho matter before his colleague the Minister for Education. IMMIGRANTS. - • Auckland, Juno 20. Some of tho immigrants who arrived by tho s.s. Cornwall yesterday morning 'havo already been found employment by the Labour Bureau. The immigrants are mostly, from tho British Isles, but the newcomers include some from Canada and tho United States. Another fifty arrived this morning by the Takapuna, having transshipped from tho Corinthic. These also aro promising colonists.. > Their homes were in tho 01?: Country, and their pursuits are varied. A number pf the immigrants by the Corn, wall have found work in. Auckland, and tho remainder have gone to the Waikato to engago in agricultural pursuits.
SCARLET FEVER. Dunodin, June 20. Scarlet fever .is unusually prevalent in Otago and Southland this winter; Fortyfive cases have been reported during the pre-' sent month. For the whole of June in 1906 there were only 19, and in 1907 twelve. Last 1 month there were 59 cases. CHARGE OF SHOOTING. . Invercargill, June 21. A man named Stott has been arrested at Edendale on a charge of shooting a girl named Brown. ' The particulars aro meagre, but it is understood that Miss Browa is a pupil teacher at an Invercargill school. Miss Brown is wounded in tho arm, but not seriously so far as is at present known.
