... — THEFT OF JEWELLERY. SHOP WINDOW BROKEN IN CUBA ) ' STREET. GOODS VALUED AT "BETWEEN £400 . . AND £500 TAKEN. A. sensational occurrenco took place yesterday morning, when a burglar broke tho window of a jeweller's shop in Cuba Street, ind stole a number of valuable articlos worth several hundred pounds. ■
'Inquiry elicited.tho fact that tho shop of Mr. T. Crouch, jeweller, No. 40 Cuba Street, was tho scene of the thoft, which took place in the, darkness at 5.30 o'clock in tho morning, beforo the city was awake. • Constable M'Gregor relieved the constablo on duty, in Cuba Street at five o'clock, and passed Mr. Crouch's shop a few minutes before the burglary was committed. Tho constable ;was making his way . up the street towards Mossrs. Veitch and Allan's cornor, trying the doors of the shops en route, according to custom, whon ho hoard the . sound of breaking glass. Ho retraced his steps trying to locato the place of the occurrence, as he went along, and eventually came to the • jeweller's shop, owned by Mr. Crouch. Here he found the window, of , thick plate glass, .broken, the weapon used to do tho damage apparently being a largo stone which was found on the footpath.. Further investigation revealed tho fact that the act had been committed with intent, a quantity of jewellery—since fonnd to be mostly rings and a few brooches, stated, to be valued at between £400. and £500—being missing. Mr. who was sleeping on the premises, heard the sound'of breaking glass, but not thinking it' was his own front window, took no further; notice of it. There wore no shutters on the window, the only \ covering being a canvas screen drawn across tho glass. By the time the constable arrived'on the spot there was no one about. The thief took a big risk in adopting tho crude method of breaking the window with • a stone, and would appear to have been a foolish or desperate man. . The detective force have the matter in hand. .
