' MASTEETOH. i CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce met yesterday afternoon. There wero present: —Messrs. T. G. Mason (chairman), J. D. Cniickshanks, J. 0. Kwington, W. B. Chennolls, G. C. Summcrell, W. E. Chamberlain, M. Caselberg, E. H. Radiueton, J. B. Moodie, H. C. Robinson, and 'I'. Kagg. 'iho Treasurer reported a credit balance of 6s. 2d. Mr. J. M'lntyre, chairman of tho Waipu-kurau-Pongaroa-Mastcrton Railway League, wroto requesting that the Chamber should appoint a member to act on the executive of - the League. Tho president (Mr. T. G. 'Mason) was unanimously selected for the office. ' ■Tho chairman said that very satisfactory progress was being made in the direction of obtaining signatures to ,;the petition for a: continuous telephone- service, and it was likely that the change desired would ho brought about. The meeting then adjourned. Mr. W. P. James, S.M., • occupied the Bench at a sitting of "the Police Court yesterday. Two men named John Harvey and Charles Russell, chargcd with being idlo and disorderly, were given the benefit of tho doubt, and ordered to come up for sentenco when callcd on. George Donoghue was- fined £2, for insobriety, with the alternative of. seven days' imprisonment. Mr. W. P. James, S.M., held a sitting of , the Assessment Court yesterday morning, for tho purpose of considering objections to the Masterton County electoral roll • for tha coming year. Tho only alteration made in the roll was tho addition of ono name on account of a chango of property. The Masterton members of'tho Fire Board met on Thursday evening, and went into tho legal aspect of the matter of taking over control of tho Fire Police Corps. Tho chairman (Mr. p. Pragncll) was deputed to make further inquiries into tho question, and to report to the next meeting of the Board. Tho secretary was instructed to invito tenders for the supply of horses for the " Jubilee " engine. Tho annual meeting of tho Board will bo held on Monday, Juno 29. A meeting of tho ladies' committee, which are arranging a ball in aid of the hospital on July 2, was bold on Wednesday afternoon, when it was reported that a large number of donations had boon 'made towards tha supper, and in a groat many instances refreshments had also beon promised. It was decided to hold a children's ball on July 3, the evening aftor tho principal ball, and the charges were fixed at Is. for children and 2s. for adults.
Referring to tlio reported suggestion of Mr. H. 0. L. Robinson, of tho Masterton Trust Lands Trust, as to, tho method of using certain of tho unoccupied sections belonging to' the Trust, it should be pointed outtliat what Mr. Robinson had in his mind v, - as not a scheme for borrowing money wheroivith to build homes suitable for workmen, but some arrangement whereby threefourths of the estimated value of the approved building proposed to bo erected on any of theso sections be advanced. FEII/DING. • The Mayor of Feilding yesterday afternoon received a'tolegram from tho Promier, stating that lie; will be pleased to meet the deputation regarding the Jarorangi Estate.. Tho inessago added that Sir Joseph Ward would not be passing through Feilding until late yesterday evening, as lie had missed the express. lie would come on from Wanganui by a""goods train. Mr. A. U. A ver,y pleasant evening was spent, a feature being the instrumental selections of Mr. 0. Leo. GREYTOWN. .< BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. A special meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was hold on Thursday night, and the public were invited to attend. The object was' to consider what questions could bo put before the Prime Minister on his visit hero next Wednesday. It was dccided to put the following matters bofore him:—(l) Extra railway sheep accommodation ; (2) tho erection of a verandah •at tho local railway station; (3) the sion of a public office for those Government servants doing business in this district; (4) tho construction of a track from Greytown through the Waiohine Gorgo over the Tararuas and on to Otaki; (5) tho construction of bridges to connect, Greytown with tho East Coast, via tho Pukengaki country. This latter question, it was untimately docided to' leave to the Greytown Branch of tho Liberal Association, as they havo made arrangements to bring it before tho Premier. FEATHERSTOX. On Thursday at Greytown the I'akakoura hockey team were defeated by tho Greytown team by eleven goals to nil. Tho ground was in a sloppy state, and there was no brilliant play. ' Misses Bicknoll and Humphries were the chief Scorers. Misses C. Easthopo and T. Fugo. were tho pick of tho Feathorston team. Mr, D. C. Humphrey was referee. After tho match tho visiting team was entertained at afternoon tea. ' At Masterton .on Thursday Mrs. E. < H. Saunders defeated • Miss Robieson in a golf match for the challenge rose bowl. This is the second time Mrs. Saunders has proved victorious in this contest. . Somo 25 performers are taking part in thelecture concert hero on Monday night.
