Millar returns to Welling, ton from -Napier to-night. /The Hon. J. Carroll is expected to return to Wellington this evening. * The Hon. R. M'Nab will return to Wellington from the South to-morrow morning. ■Mr. J. M'Lcllan, of this city, is on a visit to Dunedin. Ho is expccted back next week. It is reported that Acting-Detectivo Lewis has been promoted to the position of detective. Detective Cassells arrested a man last night on a charge of theft of 32a. at Mangawhare on June 13. . Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the Employers' Federation, leaves on Tuesday on a visit to Palmerston North, '\ / Sergeant W. Day, R.N.Z.E., has been appointed enstodian of the Wellington Garrison Hall, Buckle Street. Mr. Justice Cooper will leave this morning for Napior, where the Supreme Court will sit on Monday. It is stated that Detective Bishop, of Christchurch, will succeed Chief Detectivo Chrystal at Christchurch. Dr. Chappie, M.P., was congratulated on his victory at Tuapeka by the No-License delegates at Thursday's meeting. His Excellency the Governor, Lady Plunket,. and suite, will attend the Kubelits concert to bo given at Palmorston North on Friday noxt, Juno 'SG. Lieutenant-Colonel Knight, the new North Island commander of tho Salvation Army, arrived yesterday from Christchurch, to take up his quarters in this city. v Mr. T. H. Hamer, ono of the commissioners appointed by the Government to arrange a reception to tho American fleet, leaves for Auckland again to-day. Constable Heffornan, of the Tinakori Road Police Station, is. to loavo fyr Waipukurau this morning to take chargo .of the station there. Constable Steevcns, of Waipukurau, is taking the place'of Constable Heffernan. Mr. H. S. Moss, secretary of the' Wairarapa A. and P. Association, Carterton, intends, if possible, to pay a visit to England in December next, and to return to Now Zealand some time in the following June. Archbishop Redwood has left for Sydney in order that ho may confer with Cardinal Moran on various questions affecting the arch-diocese bofore the Cardinal's departure, early next month, to . attend tho Papal Jubilee at Rome and tho Eucharistic Conference at Westminster. The Archbishop will also visit Queensland, where ho has a brother residing. A pleasing coremony took place in tho offices of tho New Zealand Express Co., Ltd., on Wednesday evening, when Mr. E. I. Rodger was presented by' the members of the local offico and outdoor staff with a handsomo marble timepiece, on the occasion of his marriage. The head office of tho company also signified their intorest on tho occasion by sending a cheque. Yesterday the Resident Secretary of tho Australian Mutual Provident Sooioty (Mr. E. W. Lowe) .celebrated tho fortieth anniversary of his connection 'with that progressive institution. As an evidence' of its growth, it is interesting to note that when Sir. Lowe ontcred its service the annual, incomo was £'180,000, and the accumulated funds showed a total of £602,055. To-day the annual income exceeds £3,000,000, and the funds aro over £23,000,000
