At the Republican National Convention at Chicago seven hundred delegates, who support the nomination of Mr. W. IT. Taft as Republican candidate for- tho Presidency, elected Sonator Lodge permanent chairman. Senator Lodge, made a speeoh, oulogising President Roosevelt's policy, and describing. Mr. Roosevelt as "tho best abusd and most popular man in the United States to day." This evoked a tremendous outburst oi enthusiasm, lasting forty minutes, and a demonstration in favour of renewing President Roosevolt's torm. There wore insistent shouts of "four years more." . • . Senator Lodge, resuming, declared that President Roosevelt's refusal of re-nomimi-tion was dictated by the loftiest motives,,and by his notable loyalty to American traditions. His refusal was final and irrevocable. Tho cheering of President Roosevelt; was newed. After transacting, formal .business the Convention adjourned.
