UNITED STATES FLEET.
''' INCREASED SUBSIDY. ' (BT lELIQBAT3—rKESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, Juns 17. . The. Executive Committee in conneatioi with' the visit of the American fleet held it lengthy mooting to-day, the Mayor- (Mr; A. M. Myers) presiding. Mr. T. E. Donno (Government Commissioner) was also present. In view. of the fact that the Government lias increased the subsidy to one of £1 for £1, instead of a sum of £500, thus bringing the total amount available for the citizens . programme to £6000 various additions and alterations will now be made; The increased subsidy will have the effect of enabling the cowmitteo to submit a more complete and somewhat extended programme (includiiig il luminations 'and decorations) than was for merly possible. THE PROPOSED FLAG WELCOME. (BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL COItIIESI'ONDEKX). Mastsrton, Juno 17. In conncction with the proposed flag welcome by New Zoaland'towns to the American fleet at'.Auckland, Sir Joseph Ward has sent thu ' following telegram to ' the various Mayors:— " A large; number of replies from the mayors of cities and boroughs agreeing to supply flags have been received, and as a number of them have asked what the size and design should be, I send you this'circular telegram by way of suggestion. The flags aro intended to be displayed in Queen Street, Auckland, the Mayor of that city having consented to this being done. No pales aro required, merely fast tying ropes. I would recommend that the-size, of the. tfngs should . bo not loss than 10ft. by oft., and that they be made of wliiti banting wit-li red lettering, the letters to bo lo inches in width. I think tho lettering should be put lengthwise. The flags will be returned to the respective citie3 ana towns when done with. 1 do not consider it necessary thatthe flaj;s should bear either the British ensign, or the stars and stripes, as there will be a large number of American and English flags displayed in Auckland outside the Corporation flnss. In : forwarding you tho above, suggestion I wish, however, "to say that while ■uniformity .woula have a .very nice effect, neither the size nor tho colour of the flags I suggest; is arbitrary. Ii any of tho cities or boro'tichs find, it difficult to have flagsmado locally, which is no doubt preferable if they can arrange it. I shall be • glad to give ■ instructions to have thorn made wherever they desire. The flags should bo addressed to the' Government Commissioners at Auckland, and shoufcl reach thorn not later than August 5."
